Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team lost the first set but bounced back to win the next three in the 3-1 road victory at Augusta University Saturday afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference contest.
The Pacers are now 20-3 on the season, including a 9-3 mark against league foes.
Ashley Diedrich led everyone with 11 kills while hitting .346. She contributed seven digs, three blocks and an ace in the victory. Julia Forster reached double digits with 10 kills while also chipping in six digs. Aly Johnson had an outstanding afternoon, slamming home nine of her 15 attacks for a .533 attack percentage while registering just one error. She added a pair of blocks. Taylor Stratton smashed eight kills while Ashley Lind added five.
Emily Teelon dished out a team-best 26 assists while slicing the defense for a match-high three aces. Lauren Howard tallied 16 assists in the win.
Behind the service line, USC Aiken posted 11 aces. In addition to Teelon's three, Monica Cardona also contributed three. Shawn Hotson notched two aces while Diedrich, Johnson and Katie Toman all had one apiece.
Defensively, Toman led everyone with 19 digs. Cardona and Hotson each added seven. At the net, Alicia Hines shared the honors with a match-best three blocks, including one of the solo kind. Ashley Lind was in on a block as well.
After losing the opening set, the Pacers regrouped heading into the second stanza. The squad trailed 14-12 before Diedrich registered a kill. With Cardona dropping back to serve, the squad went on a 9-1 spurt to open the set wide open. During the run, Johnson posted a kill and was in on a block. Forster notched a kill while Cardona served up an ace.
The Jaguars pulled within four, but the Pacers netted three of the final four points of the frame. Forster and Stratton had kills while Hotson posted an ace en route to the 25-18 victory.
USC Aiken led in the early going of the third frame. After a bad set by the home team, USC Aiken went up 3-0 on an ace by Teelon and an attack error by the Jaguars. Augusta took the lead at 6-54, but a service error sparked a run by head coach Glenn Cox's team.
Johnson served an ace, Diedrich had a kill and the dyad of Hines and Diedrich blocked a shot during a spurt that made it 9-6. USC Aiken increased its lead to six when Diedrich found the floor off a pass from Teelon, making it 17-11. Lind's kill from Howard made it 22-14 and the squad wrapped up the set with a 25-15 win after Toman ended the stanza with an ace.
The fourth set was never in doubt as USC Aiken jumped to a 10-5 lead on Hotson's ace. Leading 15-13, Johnson stopped a brief run by Augusta University with a kill. Forster and Diedrich followed her up with back-to-back winners for an 18-13 advantage.
Leading 19-15, a service error by the home team put the ball back on the Pacers' side of the floor. Lind had a kill and Hines registered back-to-back winners. Hotson got into the act with a kill before Lind's match-winner found the floor and wrapping up the 25-16 victory.
For the match, USC Aiken hit .309, totaling 51 kills against 13 errors. After committing six errors in the opening frame, Cox's team hit at least .250 in the second and third stanzas before garnering 17 kills against one error for a .533 attack percentage in the fourth set.
