Pacers And Falcons Play To Double-Overtime Draw

Box Score

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's soccer team recorded a 1-1 draw at Montevallo Saturday evening in a Peach Belt Conference contest.

The Pacers are now 4-3-3 on the season, including a 1-2-1 mark against league foes.

Head coach Ike Ofoje's team took control from the outset. The squad earned its first corner kick 63 seconds into the match and Andre Simmond registered the first shot of the contest at the 1:34 mark. Patrick Wiedemann blasted a shot on goal 5:40 into the match, but was turned away.

USC Aiken continued applying pressure, earning another corner kick in the 14th minute and followed it up with another one 11 minutes later.

Simmond, Nathan Shanko and Dean Smith each fired shots toward the goal, but none could find the back of the net.

The Falcons took the lead in the 37th minute and the home team maintained the advantage heading into the second half.

After an inspired speech by Ofoje, the squad continued attacking the offensive third of the pitch. Nineteen seconds into the second half, Simmond scored on a penalty kick, knotting the contest at 1-1.

The Pacers had several chances in the final 20 minutes of regulation, but the Falcons' keeper was up to the task of stopping USC Aiken.

USC Aiken controlled the first overtime session, not allowing Montevallo to take a shot. During the first 10 minutes of extra time, Ofoje's team took a pair of shots that sailed high and earned one corner kick. The second session was much of the same as Shanko's two shots were saved. The two attempts by Shanko marked the only two shots for either team in the second overtime session.

USC Aiken out-shot the home team 20-6 and held a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Montevallo was whistled for five yellow cards while Ofoje's team was cited for one.

Andre Bernardini played all 110 minutes between the pipes, allowing one goal without stopping a shot.

The Pacers return to action Wednesday when they travel to Francis Marion for a 7 p.m., contest. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
