Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Five University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball student-athletes netted double figures as the team posted a 74-53 victory at Montevallo Monday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 11-7 overall, including a 7-2 mark against conference competition. The Falcons fall to 1-15 on the year and remain winless against league foes (0-9).
Senior Mackenzie Reese led everyone with her 16-point, 10-rebound performance for a double-double. Rookie Emry Tsitouris accounted for 15 points and six rebounds while Kassy Johannsen notched 14 points, four rebounds and three blocks.
Kate Duff came off the bench to hit for 13 points while Amaura Brandt contributed 11 points and five boards in the victory.
For the game, head coach Mike Brandt's team connected on 26-of-53 shots from the floor (49.1 percent) and 17-of-24 foul shots (70.8 percent). USC Aiken forced 22 turnovers and converted them to 29 points. The squad also maintained a 36-33 edge on the glass and led from start to finish. The Pacers e21-point win marked the largest lead of the game.
The Pacers jumped on the board with the first four points of the game on baskets by Reese and Tsitouris just 1:08 into the contest. The Falcons hit a three-point basket, but USC Aiken countered with six straight points for a 10-3 margin. Johannsen netted three of the points and Duff drilled her first of two three-pointers for the game during the run.
Tsitouris buried a short jumper for a 19-8 lead, marking the first time Brandt's team extended the lead to double digits. The Pacers maintained a double-digit advantage for much of the first period, but two free throws by Montevallo made it a 32-26 game with 1:17 to play. With 18 seconds to go, Tiffany Addison found Johannsen for a lay-up and a 34-26 lead heading into the break.
Brandt drained a three-point shot at the 18:29 mark of the second half, pushing the lead to 11 and the Pacers' lead stayed in double digits until the 11:40 mark. After the margin was trimmed to nine, Tsitouris took a pass from Reese and once again put USC Aiken up by double digits.
However, the Falcons would not go quietly as the home squad managed to make it a seven-point contest with just 5:41 to go. With the score at 57-48 at the 4:19 mark, Brandt's team finished the game on a 16-5 run for the 21-point victory. This included a 12-0 spurt that lasted just 2:06 to put the game away.
The Pacers return to action Saturday at 5:30 p.m., when they host Francis Marion at 5:30 p.m. The game is part of Homecoming.
