Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory in the win over Georgia College Saturday afternoon. Set scores were 25-10, 25-15 and 25-13.
The Pacers are now 11-2 overall, including a 5-0 mark against league opponents.
Leading the way for head coach Glenn Cox's team was Ashley Diedrich, who hammered home a match-best 13 kills. Alicia Hines and Aly Johnson each had six while Shawn Hotson and Taylor Stratton had four kills apiece.
Sheila Walsh led everyone with 19 assists while totaling a match-best four aces. She also added three kills. At the service line, Diedrich and Hotson added two aces apiece while Lauren Howard and Monica Cardona each had one.
Defensively, Katie Toman led everyone with 12 digs and added a kill. Hotson amassed nine digs while Cardona, Diedrich and Walsh all had seven digs.
At the net, Hines led the team with three block assists. Diedrich and Johnson had two.
In the opening frame, Cox's squad jumped out to a 7-2 lead thanks in part to an ace by Cardona and a pair of kills by Diedrich. The Bobcats pulled within three at 9-6, but Hotson's kill gave momentum back to the home team. Toman and Johnson had kills while an attack error on the visitors pushed the score to 13-6. The Pacers pushed the lead to double digits when Johnson found the court on an ace, making the score 20-10. USC Aiken closed out the set on an error by the Bobcats.
USC Aiken trailed 1-0 in the second set before embarking on a 4-0 run thanks in part to a pair of aces by Walsh and a kill by Hines. The squad jumped out to an 11-3 lead and never looked back. The team quickly made it a 10-point margin after an error by the visitors at 14-4. USC Aiken traded points the rest of the way. Late in the frame, Julia Forster picked up a kill and Brittany Faulkner's kill ended the set.
The Pacers were ahead 3-0 in the final frame after an error by the Bobcats and back-to-back aces from Walsh. The visitors pulled within two on a couple of occasions early, but the Pacers widened the lead to 10-3 on an error. The squad made it 14-4 after Hotson had back-to-back aces. A kill from Diedrich made it 15-4, which forced another time-out by the Bobcats.
USC Aiken embarked on a 4-0 run a few points later, making it a 22-9 contest when Lauren Howard found the court on an ace. Hines eventually ended the match with a powerful kill off a pass from Howard.
For the match, the Pacers hit .286 while limiting the Bobcats to -.074. USC Aiken had 41 kills compared to 14 by the visitors.
The Pacers return to action on Friday, Oct. 3, when they play at Columbus State starting at 7 p.m.
