Box Score GREENWOOD, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team needed just 1:15 to sweep Lander Wednesday evening in a Peach Belt Conference contest. Set scores were 25-19, 25-23, 25-20.
The Pacers improve to 9-2 overall, including 3-0 against PBC competition. The Bearcats are now 10-1 on the year and 1-1 against league foes.
Taylor Stratton led the way with a match-high 14 kills while hitting .346. Ashley Diedrich accounted for 12 kills and a match-best 20 digs. She also posted a match-high three aces and the lone solo block of the match.
Sheila Walsh narrowly missed a triple-double but still put forth an amazing match. She dished out a match-best 40 assists to go along with 13 digs and nine kills while hitting .471. Aly Johnson added eight kills while hitting .500. Alicia Hines and Shawn Hotson each had six kills.
Along with Diedrich's three aces, Monica Cardona had two while Katie Toman, Hotson and Walsh all chipped in one.
Defensively, Cardona tallied 15 digs and Hotson added 14. Toman accounted for 11. At the net, Hines was in on three block assists.
In the opening set, the Pacers trailed 9-8 before Stratton hammered home a kill that sparked an 8-0 spurt. During the run, Hines had a kill while Diedrich added two. Walsh had one while Diedrich and Hines were in on a block. USC Aiken managed to cruise to the 25-19 win as Hines slammed home the final point of the frame.
Head coach Glenn Cox's team was tied with Lander in the second set at 17 apiece. Hotson came up big with a kill and Diedrich's ace pushed the score to 19-17. The Bearcats would rally for a 23-22 lead, but Stratton's kill evened the contest. Back-to-back attack errors by the home team allowed the Pacers to close out the set 25-23.
The Pacers and Bearcats were once again tied in the third stanza at 16-16. Diedrich's kill off a pass from Walsh gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish. Johnson's kill pushed the lead to 18-16 just before Hotson and Johnson blocked a shot for a 19-16 margin. Lander would not get any closer the rest of the way as a kill from Stratton and an ace by Cardona allowed USC Aiken to record the sweep.
