Box Score 2 ANDERSON, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken defeated Anderson 5-0 before falling to Armstrong by a count of 6-1 in an elimination game Sunday afternoon in the NCAA Tournament.
The Pacers conclude their stellar season with a 34-16 mark.
Against the No. 2 seeded Trojans, head coach Jerry Snyder's team struck first, plating five runs in the second inning. With a dominant pitching performance by India Kornegay, the squad ousted the top-seeded team in the region.
After a scoreless first frame, Victoria Burkett beat out a single to the shortstop. With one down, Alyssa Cook reached on a catcher's interference call, pushing Burkett to second. The dyad moved up 60 feet on a wild pitch.
Magan Thrower sliced a single to left, plating a run. Brittney Williamson then reached on an error by the left fielder and moved to second on the throw. On the play, Cook crossed home for a 2-0 edge.
Kaitlyn White stepped to the plate and slapped a single through the right side as Thrower raced home. Samantha Chubb completed the scoring when she narrowly missed a home run as her long fly ball was just a few feet short of the wall. The sacrifice fly scored White for the 5-0 advantage.
From that point on, neither team was able to get things going, but Kornegay dominated the Trojans. For the second consecutive outing, she gave up just one hit while throwing a complete-game shutout. She struck out 11 while walking just four in the contest.
Burkett was the lone Pacer to register two hits in the contest. White, Sarah Montei, Chubb, Williamson and Thrower all registered one RBI apiece.
After staving off elimination, USC Aiken faced off against Armstrong for the second time in two days. Despite scoring first, the Pacers were unable to maintain the lead as the Pirates used two homers, clinching the region championship.
USC Aiken took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With one down, Montei ripped a double to the gap in right center. With two down, she took off when Ashley Metts made contact with a pitch. Metts sent a shot up the middle, allowing Montei to race home for the lead.
The Pirates struck for three runs in the third and never looked back despite an outstanding effort by USC Aiken.
Thrower led the team with two hits in the contest. Metts and Montei were the only other two that registered base hits.
Taylor Morgan took the loss for USC Aiken. She struck out six in the contest. The team posted two wins in the NCAA Tournament, which marked the first two wins in the program's NCAA Tournament postseason history.
