Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team registered a sweep of conference foe UNC Pembroke Saturday afternoon, winning by scores of 1-0 and 6-5.
The Pacers improve to 26-11 overall and 9-5 against league competition.
In the opener, head coach Jerry Snyder's team got on the board in the bottom of the second when Ashley Metts hammered a solo shot over the center field fence with one away.
The run marked more than enough for hurler India Kornegay, who picked up the win.
USC Aiken threatened to add to its 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth with two away. Brittney Williamson singled to right and Kaitlyn White followed her up with a double down the left field line, putting both in scoring position. However, Sarah Montei was unable to bring either home, ending the frame.
After a one-out double in the top of the second, Kornegay did not allow another base runner until a single with two down in the seventh, retiring 16 straight batters.
For the game, Metts led the way with two hits, including the solo shot. White, Victoria Burkett, Magan Thrower and Williamson each had hits in the contest.
Kornegay threw a three-hit shutout, striking out five in the process.
In the nightcap, Snyder's team jumped out to a 5-0 lead, thanks in part to a two-run first and two-run second inning.
White started things off with a single and she eventually swiped second. With one down, Samantha Chubb powered home a two-run blast for a 2-0 advantage.
The Pacers kept it up the following inning, scoring two more. Thrower earned a lead-off walk and Shannon Traylor came in as a pinch runner. Alyssa Cook singled, putting runners on first and second. Burkett ran for Cook and both moved up 60 feet on Williamson's sacrifice bunt.
Brielle Jungblut singled to second, plating Traylor. Jungblut swiped second and White's grounder scored the team's fourth run of the game.
In the fifth, Metts singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After scampering to third on a passed ball, Thrower singled her home for a 5-0 edge.
UNC Pembroke tied it up with three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh.
After Kornegay shut down the Lady Braves in the eighth, Williamson singled to left with one down in the bottom of the frame. Jungblut beat out an infield hit and White's well-placed hit in the infield allowed the bases to be full with just one down. Montei rocketed a shot just above the pitcher's head and outstretched glove into center field, scoring Williamson for the game-winning run.
Taylor Morgan threw six innings without a decision as she gave up four runs, with three earned. She struck out five while walking just one.
Kornegay (17-2) picked up the win, tossing two innings in relief. She struck out one and allowed a run on two hits.
At the plate, Chubb led the way with two RBI. White and Metts each had three hits while Jungblut tallied two.
Chubb's round-tripper was the only extra base hit of the day for Snyder's squad. White swiped two bases while Jungblut stole one.
The Pacers return to action tomorrow against Francis Marion in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Live stats, video and audio will be available at PacerSports.com.
