Box Score COLUMBUS, Ga. – A trio of pitchers combined on a four hitter as the No. 16 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team earned a 6-1 victory at No. 10 Columbus State Sunday afternoon in the series finale.
The Pacers are now 31-13 overall, including a 17-10 mark against Peach Belt Conference competition.
Taylor Peed started the game on the mound and worked three innings, giving up one run on three hits. He had four strikeouts. Ben Black (5-1) came in and tossed five innings of one-hit ball with five strikeouts while James Lynch threw a scoreless ninth to secure the win.
At the plate, Sean Miller accounted for two hits and two runs while Bosse had two hits, two RBI and scored twice. Charles Padilla also had a pair of hits and one RBI. T.J. Costen had a hit, one RBI and scored once and Ryan Metzler crossed home after he earned a hit.
Head coach Kenny Thomas' team fell behind 1-0 after the first inning but tied the game in the third. Bosse led off the inning with a walk and promptly stole second. With one down, Padilla hit one to the gap in left center, allowing Bosse to trot home, tying the game.
USC Aiken took the lead in the fourth when Metzler and Miller took off for a double steal, which allowed Miller to swipe home for the 2-1 edge. Miller had led off the inning with a single to right.
Good things continued with the lead-off batter for the Pacers. After seeing the first two pitches, Bosse launched a solo homer over the left field fence to lead off the fifth for a 3-1 margin.
Miller led off the sixth with a single to right center and moved to second on a groundout. With two down, Metzler walked. Both runners were going on contact and Miller scored when Costen laced a single to right center. Metzler, who had moved to third on Costen's single, scored on a wild pitch which increased the lead to 5-1.
Thomas' squad tacked on a run in the ninth for insurance. Costen reached on a fielding error and moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt. On the next pitch, he raced home when Bosse slapped a single through the left side for the final tally of the game.
After working a near-perfect five innings, Black was relieved for Lynch in the bottom of the ninth. He allowed a lead-off walk, but quickly retired the side on three straight fly balls.
