Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. – The No. 14 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team fell behind early but rallied for eight of the final nine runs in the 8-5 road victory at Newberry.
The Pacers improve to 25-8 on the season.
Head coach Kenny Thomas' team found itself trailing 4-0 after the first inning, but the bats came alive while the defense picked up.
Facing a 4-0 deficit in the top of the fourth, USC Aiken got to work, trimming the lead to just one at 4-3. Tyler Moore led things off with a walk and moved to second on T.J. Costen's single. A balk moved both runners up 90 feet, which proved to be big as Ty Barkell reached first on an error and moved to second while the two base runners trotted home.
Two batters later, Ryan Metzler reached on a fielder's choice. Although Matt Bosse was out on the play, Barkell crossed home, making it a 4-3 ball game.
In the bottom of the frame, the Wolves got a run back on a wild pitch for a 5-3 edge.
Costen trimmed the deficit to one once again, this time coming in the top of the fifth. After Sean Miller singled, was sacrificed to second and swiped third, Costen's deep fly ball to center evened the contest at five.
Thomas' team took the lead for good in the sixth as errors once again did in the home squad. Bosse led off the stanza with a single and moved to second when Metzler reached on an error. Ben Donath reached first on a throwing error, which allowed Bosse to score.
Connor Oliveri followed Donath up with a double to the gap in right center field, which drove in Donath and Metzler for the 7-5 score.
In the eighth, Kody Belcher completed the scoring by ripping a pitch into left field, knocking in Miller as he worked his way around the bases. After singling, Miller stole second before coming home on the hit.
Taylor Peed worked three innings in relief and did not give up a hit en route to earning the victory for Thomas and his team. Caleb Smith worked a solid eighth frame while James Lynch's outstanding ninth inning on the mound gave him the save. Lynch struck out two of the three batters he faced.
Oliveri drove in a pair of runs while Miller had two hits and scored twice.
For the game, USC Aiken had eight runs on eight hits with one error while Newberry finished with five runs on seven hits and three miscues.
The Pacers return to action Friday when they host Lander at 7 p.m., in the first game of a three-contest series.
