Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – The No. 17 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team cruised to a 19-7 victory at GRU Augusta Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 29-10 overall and 15-8 against Peach Belt Conference competition.
Ryan Metzler tied the USC Aiken single-game record for hits with five. He led head coach Kenny Thomas' team with a five-for-six effort. He drove in three runs as well. Sean Miller added four hits and scored four runs while Kody Belcher and Tyler Moore each had three hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Ben Donath and Ty Barkell had two hits apiece and each scored three times in the contest.
USC Aiken registered 19 runs on 25 hits and posted 16 RBI.
Matt Hissong pitched six innings and gave up six runs on nine hits, but only five were earned. He struck out three en route to the win. Sam Daniel, Hunter Hubbard and Jake Padgett all worked one inning in relief.
USC Aiken trailed 1-0 heading into the top of the second but plated four runs, taking a 4-1 lead. However, the Jaguars scratched across three runs, tying the contest.
Thomas' team took the lead for good, scoring nine straight for a 13-4 lead. With the score at 13-3, USC Aiken tacked on a run in the sixth and seventh before opening the floodgates with four more in the ninth for the 19-7 victory.
In the second, Barkell led off by drawing a walk. He moved to third on Metzler's single to right center. Matt Bosse reached on a fielder's choice and Barkell scored on the play. Miller singled, driving in Ben Donath and Bosse.
USC Aiken plated four in the fourth when Belcher slapped a single through the left side, scoring Miller. Two batters later, T.J. Costen lifted a fly ball to right that scored Belcher. Barkell and Moore registered a double steal in which Moore swiped home. Metzler doubled home Barkell, completing the huge frame.
Thomas' team was back at it in the fifth as Belcher lined had a fly ball that plated Donath. Three batters later, Barkell singled home Moore and Charles Padilla. Metzler followed it up with a single to left, driving in Moore.
With the game in hand, the bats stayed hot for USC Aiken as the team scored four more in the ninth. Padilla registered a sacrifice fly before Miller singled through the left side, scoring Dylan Durham. Two batters later, Moore cleared the bases with a triple that scored Miller and Randy Luckett.
