Pacers Earn Senior Day Sweep Over Georgia College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Georgia College by scores of 6-5 and 4-1 Saturday afternoon.

The Pacers improve to 32-13 overall and 15-7 against Peach Belt Conference competition.

In the opener, USC Aiken threatened in the first inning, loading the bases, but failed to produce any runs. With one down, Sarah Montei belted a single up the middle prior to Samantha Chubb singling through the left side, putting runners on first and second. After another out, Hillary Stewart drew a walk, loading the bases. However, Alyssa Cook ripped a pitch that was caught by the third baseman, ending the frame.

Both pitchers settled in as neither team was able to score until the visiting Bobcats broke the tie in the fifth.

With one down, Georgia College loaded the bases and a single brought in a run. After another out, Kristen Humphries launched a grand slam for a 5-0 edge.

USC Aiken did not give up. Despite getting out in order in the bottom of the fifth, the squad produced a huge inning in the sixth.

After the leadoff batter was retired, Brielle Jungblut came in as a pinch hitter and promptly singled to shortstop. Stewart drew a walk as did Alyssa Cook, loading the bases. Victoria Burkett came in as a pinch hitter and was retired.

With two down, Andrea Daring reached first on a fielding error, allowing Jungblut to score unearned. Kaitlyn White singled up the middle, scoring Cook and Madison Labrador, who re-entered the game for Daring. Montei followed it up with a single, scoring Brittney Williamson, who reached on a single to right.

The Bobcats changed pitchers, but Samantha Chubb ripped a single to left, plating White for what turned out to be the game-winning run. USC Aiken was unable to add to its lead, but held a 6-5 edge heading into the top of the seventh.

India Kornegay returned to the circle in the top of the seventh and despite allowing two base runners, forced a groundout to end the game.

For the contest, White drove in a pair of runs while Chubb and Montei each had one. Montei and Chubb had two hits apiece while White, Jungblut and Williamson all had one apiece.

Kornegay struck out 10 en route to the complete-game victory. She allowed seven hits and three walks as well.

In the nightcap, USC Aiken found itself trailing 1-0 after the top of the second, but head coach Jerry Snyder's team came alive in the bottom half of the stanza.

Magan Thrower singled through the left side and moved to third on Labrador's double to left center.  Shannon Traylor came in as a pinch runner for Thrower and Jungblut's bunt single scored her. An errant throw led to Labrador moving to third. With two down, White tripled down the left field line, scoring Williamson for a 3-1 margin.

The Pacers tacked on a run in the fourth after Jungblut singled and scored when Williamson reached on a throwing error.

Taylor Morgan continued her dominance in the circle, striking out nine in the complete-game victory. She did give up five hits, but allowed just one run.

Jungblut led the team with two hits in the second contest. Labrador, Montei, Thrower and White all had base knocks, with Labrador and White each accounting for extra-base hits.

It marked the last home game for seniors Alyssa Cook, Hillary Stewart, Brittney Williamson, Kaitlyn White and India Kornegay.

The Pacers will return to action Friday at the Peach Belt Conference tournaments. Their opponent and game time will be announced Tuesday.
