Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C. – The No. 10 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team split a pair of games against Armstrong Sunday, winning the first game 18-4 before falling 7-4 in the nightcap.
The Pacers are now 14-5 overall and 6-3 against PBC competition.
The Pacers wasted little time in finalizing the win in the first game of the afternoon. After a quick first frame by Danny Wissmann, the Pacers plated five runs on the bottom half of the frame.
Kody Belcher led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on Tyler Moore's single. T.J. Costen doubled home Belcher. With one down and runners on second and third, Matt Bosse blasted a three-run opposite field homer for a 4-0 lead. Later in the inning Sean Miller's single drove home Ryan Metzler for the 5-0 advantage.
Head coach Kenny Thomas' team scored five more runs in the third stanza for a 10-0 advantage. With one away, Metzler reached on a fielding error. A walk to Ben Donath put runners on first and second. The pair each stole a base and came home on Miller's double to center. After a fielder's choice, Belcher launched a two-run homer. USC Aiken completed the scoring when Ty Barkell's single plated Moore, who had reached on a single.
In the fifth, Costen singled with one away and moved to second on Barkell's base knock. Both came home as Bosse registered his second homer of the day for the 13-0 margin. Thomas' team made it 14-1 in the sixth when Belcher scored off a throwing error, which allowed Costen to reach first.
After adding a run in the sixth, the home bats picked back up in the eighth frame. With one down, Randy Luckett singled and moved to second on Moore's base hit. Costen's double scored one and then Grayson Smith's triple pushed two more across home before Robby Assemany's single scored the team's final run of the game.
Wissmann picked up the victory and improved to 4-0 on the season.
In the second game, the Pirates jumped on top with a three-run homer in the top of the first and never trailed despite the Pacers pulling within one on multiple occasions.
Down 3-0 in the fourth, Tyler Moore led off the frame with a triple and later scored on Costen's sacrifice fly. Three batters later, Bosse scored on Metzler's double in the gap. However, the team was unable to push across the equalizer.
The Pirates made it 4-2 in the top of the fifth and Moore's single brought home Miller, making the score 4-3.
Armstrong added a run in the sixth and two in the ninth for a 7-3 margin. USC Aiken pulled within three in the ninth when Metzler homered, but the squad could not get any closer.
The Pacers return to action Tuesday when they play host to Chowan. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
