Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team wrapped up the series with Montevallo by posting a hard fought 6-2 victory Monday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 24-8 overall, including a 12-6 mark against Peach Belt Conference foes.
The Falcons jumped on top with a homer in the first for a 1-0 advantage. However, head coach Kenny Thomas' team fought back, taking a 3-1 lead with a three-run second inning.
Ty Barkell led off the second and was not at bat for long as he blasted a solo shot over the left field wall, making it a 1-1 contest.
Matt Bosse followed him up with a single to left and moved to third when Ryan Metzler laced a double down the left field line. Ben Donath plated both runners when he launched a double to the gap in right center.
In the top of the third, the Falcons managed to get two runners on, but Danny Wissmann managed to get a lazy fly ball for the last out.
Wissmann continued to get Montevallo out with relative ease until Ben Black came in to pitch for him in the top of the seventh. After walking a batter, Black forced a double play to get out of a jam.
USC Aiken threatened in the seventh as Metzler led off the frame with a single to right. However, he was picked off. Ben Donath doubled to left center and was relieved for a pinch runner. Although Dylan Durham moved to third on a failed pick-off attempt, the Pacers were unable to tack on another run in the stanza.
In the eighth, Kody Belcher got on first after being hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a wild pitch and after trotting to third on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Moore, Belcher scored on T.J. Costen's single through the left side for a 4-2 advantage. Barkell came through in the clutch, driving in Costen on a hit-and-run for the 5-2 score. USC Aiken tacked on another run for a 6-2 margin.
For the game, Barkell wrapped out three hits and drove in two. Donath had a pair of hits with two RBI while Metzler garnered two base knocks.
Wissmann picked up the win after throwing six innings and striking out nine. He allowed just one hit in the contest. Black earned the save after working three solid innings without giving up a hit.
