Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team posted a sweep of visiting King Sunday afternoon in a non-conference contest. The Pacers won the first game 4-0 before coming from behind in game two to win 7-6.
USC Aiken is now 12-3 on the season.
The Pacers jumped on top of the Tornado in the second inning of the first game with two runs, which was more than enough for senior hurler India Kornegay.
In the second stanza, Samantha Chubb blasted a shot between two King players on the right side for a single. She moved to second on Magan Thrower's bunt and scored when Ashley Metts launched a double to right field for a 1-0 advantage. Three batters later, Brielle Jungblut reached on an error by Hannah Light, which allowed Thrower to score for the 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, Jungblut's single plated Shannon Traylor, who had come in as a pinch runner for Metts. Standing on first, Traylor easily stole second and moved to third on a well-executed sacrifice bunt by Brittney Williamson. After Jungblut's hit, Kaitlyn White's dribbler back to the circle allowed her to scamper 60 feet to first base safely.
With two on, Sarah Montei singled home Jungblut, who had been standing on second base.
For the game, Kornegay struck out 13 batters and allowed just three soft hits by the visitors. With the win, Kornegay stands at 8-0 on the young season. The victory catapulted Kornegay into first place on the all-time wins list at USC Aiken. She now has 55 for her career.
Jungblut and Metts wrapped up the game with two hits while Chubb, Montei, Thrower and White all had base knocks.
After falling behind 5-0 in the top of the first of game two, head coach Jerry Snyder's team bounced back with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame before tying the contest at six in the third.
In the bottom of the first, Madison Labrador doubled home Kaitlyn White, who had singled to lead off the frame. Two batters later, Chubb's deep fly ball plated Labrador before Thrower launched a solo homer than landed 270 feet away from home plate.
Trailing 6-3 in the third, Chubb's single through a drawn-in infield allowed Labrador to trot home. Three batters later, Metts singled home Montei, who had reached on a single. Alyssa Cook's double to left scored Williamson, tying the contest.
Taylor Morgan went to work, retiring 15 straight batters with relative ease. That allowed the Pacers to take their cuts at Light before breaking through in the seventh with the game-winning run.
After an out to start the frame, Metts reached on a throwing error by the third baseman, which heaved the ball into the dugout. Snyder used Traylor as a pinch runner and it paid off as she managed to get to third base on an infield single.
With two down, Makenzie Barbor pinch hit for Jungblut and rocketed a shot deep in the hole. Barbor hustled to first while Traylor crossed home without a look from the shortstop, completing the come-from-behind win for Snyder's group.
For the game, Labrador belted out three hits and scored twice while Chubb had two RBI. Victoria Burkett had two hits, including a double. Morgan went the distance, striking out six batters en route to the complete-game win.
The Pacers roughed up King's hurler for 14 hits while also drawing two walks in the second game.
USC Aiken returns to action Tuesday when the team hosts Erskine. Game times are slated for 2:30 p.m., and 4:30 p.m.
