Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The No. 8 University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team rolled past UNC Pembroke Saturday evening, downing the Braves by a 107-91 contest.
The Pacers improve to 26-3 overall and wrapped up the Peach Belt Conference regular season with an 18-1 mark.
Head coach Vince Alexander's team found itself trailing 22-3 just 5:45 into the contest after the visitors opened the contest on an 11-0 run.
However, similar to Wednesday's game at GRU Augusta, the Pacers slowly regained momentum, trimming the deficit to single digits when Ronald Zimmerman canned three straight free throws at the 7:25 mark.
Although USC Aiken trailed 39-25, the squad rallied back, finishing the half on a strong 7-0 run over the last 1:05. DeVontae Wright buried a jumper and Alvin Brown slammed home a dunk, pulling the team within one with 40 seconds left before the break. With just one second left in the half, Jesse Seilern drained a corner three, giving the Pacers a 49-47 lead heading into the second half. It marked the first lead of the contest by Alexander's squad.
After the Braves tied the game just 54 seconds into the second period, USC Aiken went on a 21-8 run for a 70-57 advantage.
Although UNC Pembroke pulled within 10 at the 10:46 mark, the Pacers never let the visitors any closer.
Paul Larsen connected on a three-point play for a 75-62 advantage. Then, Wright hit a jumper and Santoine Butler got into the act by draining a basket.
UNCP made a basket, but Larsen made an inside shot before Grant Harris took off on a fast break, throwing down a thunderous dunk for an 83-64 advantage.
The Pacers extended the lead to 21 on a dunk by Brown with 5:10 to go. From that point on, the teams went up and down the court, trading baskets for the most part.
For the game, Zimmerman connected on a career-high 36 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the floor, including a seven-of-13 from downtown. He also made all seven charity tosses. Wright accounted for 22 points and dished out a career-best 13 assists in 38 minutes of work.
Larsen notched a double-double by totaling 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Brown amassed a double-double by posting 15 points and 11 rebounds while also swatting away six shots.
With his six blocks, Brown tied the PBC single-season record for conference only games. He finished the PBC regular-season with 70 blocks, tying the Pacers' Derek Moore for the PBC mark.
Wright concluded the PBC regular season with 1,040 minutes played, establishing a league record, besting the old mark of 757 by Vince Martin.
The Pacers take on Columbus State in the PBC Quarterfinals on Friday. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
