No. 1 Tampa Downs No. 5 Mount Olive

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C. – In the first game of the Prestige Appliance Classic, top-seeded Tampa outlasted No. 4 Mount Olive by a 12-9 count Friday morning.

Tyler Ding and Nick Tindall led the way for the victors with three RBI apiece.

With the score tied at one heading into the second, the Spartans posted a six-run spot in the top of the frame thanks in part to back-to-back round trippers for a 7-1 lead and never looked back.

However, the Trojans fought back to make it a game, plating four runs in the bottom of the third. Tampa notched five straight runs over the next four innings to make it a 12-5 contest through seven innings.

Mount Olive would rally for four runs over the final two frames, but could get no closer.

Trey Oest worked six innings to pick up the win while Brett Jones came on for the final two outs, earning the save.

Alex Regan tossed 4.2 innings of work and took the loss, giving up 10 runs on 11 hits.

In the loss, Rob Shipman was two-for-five with five RBI while Chase Edwards had two hits and two RBI.

Both teams are in action tomorrow. The Trojans play Shepherd at 11 a.m., while No. 1 Tampa squares off with No. 2/8 USC Aiken. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
