USC Aiken Records Huge Win Over Lander

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team overcame an early deficit to reel off a 75-61 victory over visiting Lander Wednesday evening in a Peach Belt Conference contest.

The Pacers are now 7-14 on the season, including a 5-7 record in the PBC.

USC Aiken was paced by Porsha Martin's 14-point, 14-rebound performance for a double-double. Mariah Durian added 11 markers in the victory. Amaura Brandt accounted for nine points and seven rebounds while Mackenzie Reese narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine boards.

Alexis Ware came off the bench to add a career-high seven markers on three-of-five shooting.

The Pacers nailed 28-of-56 shots from the floor (50 percent), including an eight-of-18 performance from the three-point stripe (44.4 percent).

USC Aiken held an 11-4 advantage on second chance points and a 12-6 lead in fast break points.

The biggest difference was the fact head coach Mike Brandt's team pulled down 48 rebounds while Lander had 24.

After trailing 25-14 with 10:18 to play in the first half, the squad reeled off an 11-1 run over the next 3:18. During the run, Durian hit a lay-up before Martin netted a jumper. Reese and Martin nailed inside shots, but the visitors made a free throw. However, Durian drained a corner three-pointer off a pass from Courtney Mealing, making it a one-point game.

A three-pointer by Brandt pulled the home team ahead for good at the 4:25 mark at 30-28. The team increased its lead to eight in the waning seconds of the first period thanks in part to a jumper by Kassy Johannsen and two free throws by Kate Duff.

USC Aiken increased its lead to 10 just 28 seconds into the final period on Mealing's jumper. The Pacers continued to add to its lead, making it 48-32 on Emily O'Rourke's bucket at the 15:28 mark.

From that point forward, Brandt's team would never allow Lander to pull within single digits. The largest lead of the contest came on a three-pointer by Ware.

USC Aiken cruised to the 14-point victory.

The Pacers return to action Saturday at 5:30 p.m., when they host Armstrong in a critical PBC contest.
