Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. – After falling to Tiffin by a 2-0 count in the first game on Sunday, the University of South Carolina Aiken softball team posted a 7-5 come-from-behind win over region foe Mount Olive in the final game of the Shaw Challenge.
The Pacers are now 10-3 on the season.
In the opener, USC Aiken managed just seven base runners as five notched hits and two drew walks. However, the Pacers had great chances in the game.
Kaitlyn White singled to start the fourth frame and moved to second when Victoria Burkett was hit by a pitch. Madison Labrador's single loaded the bases.
A fielder's choice kept the bases loaded, but White was thrown out at home. After a strikeout, Burkett was caught stealing home after the ball trickled away from the catcher, ending the threat.
Taylor Morgan took the loss, throwing six innings and giving up two runs, but only one was earned. She struck out three and gave up five hits.
Against the Trojans, the Pacers did not get off to the best of starts. USC Aiken found itself down 4-0 after the top of the first as India Kornegay gave up a grand slam. However, head coach Jerry Snyder's team would battle back.
In the bottom of the first, Kaitlyn White walked and eventually came around on Labrador's sacrifice fly, making it 4-1.
After UMO notched a 5-1 advantage in the top of the second, the Pacers scratched a run in their half of the frame. Magan Thrower led off the stanza with a single to center and moved to second on Samantha Chubb's well-executed sacrifice bunt. Thrower hustled home on Sarah Montei's single up the middle, slicing the deficit to three at 5-2.
In the third, it looked as though USC Aiken would go quietly as the first two batters made outs. However, Labrador started the rally by doubling to left center. Hillary Stewart walked and Thrower blasted a three-run homer, knotting the score at five.
With the score tied, Kornegay continued to shut down the opposition, striking out batters every frame.
Snyder's squad took the lead in the fifth. Labrador singled and moved to third when Stewart reached on a throwing error. Brittney Williamson came in for Stewart as a pinch runner and promptly swiped second. Thrower grounded out, but Labrador crossed home for a 6-5 advantage. Chubb's sacrifice plated Williamson for the 7-5 lead.
From that point forward, Kornegay became even more dominant. She struck out the side in the sixth and seventh, securing the victory.
For the game, Kornegay went the distance en route to a 7-0 record. She struck out 18 batters while giving up just five hits. She tied the school's single-game strikeout total and tied the USC Aiken career wins mark. At the dish, Thrower accounted for four RBI while Labrador and Montei each had one. Labrador and Thrower each accounted for multiple hits.
The Pacers return to action March 2 when they host King (Tenn.) in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
