Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team split a pair of home games against Lenoir-Rhyne Wednesday afternoon, posting a 3-2 win in the opener before falling 6-0 in the second game of the twinbill.
The Pacers are now 6-2 on the season.
Hurler India Kornegay continued to impress, registering 15 strikeouts in the opener. Her strikeout total allowed her to surpass 800 in her career as she now stands in fifth place on the Peach Belt Conference's all-time strikeout list.
After an infield fly to open the game, Kornegay struck out the next eight batters. In the top of the fourth, the Bears got on the board with a two-run homer.
However, head coach Jerry Snyder's team would fight back.
The Pacers threatened in the fifth inning. With two outs, Samantha Chubb singled to the pitcher. She moved to second when Magan Thrower drew a walk. USC Aiken was unable to convert as the Bears were able to get the last out of the frame.
USC Aiken evened the contest in the sixth stanza. Kaitlyn White earned a walk to lead off the inning. She was able to take her time coming home as Madison Labrador blasted a homer to the deepest part of the ballpark, knotting the contest at 2-2.
In the seventh frame, Sarah Montei walked to lead off the inning. With one down, she moved to second on a passed ball. After Thrower walked, Brittney Williamson singled and the first baseman's throw to third was off its intended target. Montei trotted across home plate for the winning run.
For the game, the Pacers recorded just four hits, but tallied three runs. Both teams left three on base.
USC Aiken dropped the second contest by a 6-0 score. In the game, Ashley Metts and Montei recorded the hits – and both were doubles.
Taylor Morgan took the loss, but struck out seven while tossing the complete game.
The Pacers return to action Friday when they take on Indiana (Pa.) in the first game of the Shaw Tournament at 5 p.m. The team will then square off against Virginia State at 7 p.m.
