Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C. – The No. 2/8 University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team registered two wins over Belmont Abbey Sunday afternoon, completing the three-game sweep. Game scores were 12-4 and 5-2.
The Pacers are now 7-2 on the season.
Tyler Moore led the team in the opener, going four-for-six with four runs scored. However, Ty Barkell went three-for-three with six RBI and two runs scored. Kody Belcher had just one hit but came around to score on three occasions.
Danny Wissmann worked five innings without giving up a hit for head coach Kenny Thomas' team. He walked just two and struck out nine en route to earning his second victory of the season. Nick Yobbi worked two innings of scoreless pitching.
The Pacers got things going in the first when Belcher led things off with a single to center. After swiping second, Moore belted a single for a 1-0 lead. Ty Barkell singled home Moore two batters later for a 2-0 advantage.
USC Aiken plated two in the third as Barkell singled home Moore, who reached on a double. On a wild play, Sean Miller hit the ball solidly and it hit the pitching mound before trickling into foul territory. However, the shot scored Barkell for a 4-0 lead.
The Pacers' fourth inning left no doubt in the game as Belcher and Moore each got on base. With one down, Barkell launched a three-run homer that landed 370 away from home plate. The shot gave USC Aiken a 7-0 margin.
The home squad added three in the fifth as Miller scored after stealing third. He came home on a throwing error by the pitcher. Two batters later, T.J. Costen plated Belcher on an infield single. Then, Barkell's sacrifice fly pushed the score to 10-0.
Ryan Metzler got into the act in the seventh as his single plated Costen. Dylan Durham scored the game's final run on Costen's fielder's choice in the eighth.
In the second contest, the Crusaders took an early 1-0 lead. However, Thomas' squad fought back, knotting the contest in the bottom of the fifth.
Ben Donath led off the frame by drawing a walk. He moved to second on Charles Padilla's single to left. Miller's sacrifice bunt moved the runners up 90 feet apiece. Belcher reached on a fielder's choice, but Donath was out at third base. However, Moore's single plated Padilla, making it 1-1.
The Pacers surged ahead down the stretch with another run in the sixth. With one down, Bosse singled to left, but was erased when Ryan Metzler reached on a fielder's choice. Donath's single to right on a hit-and-run moved Metzler to third. Donath stole second and Metzler scored on a wild pitch for a 2-1 advantage.
The Crusaders tied it in the top of the seventh only to see the Pacers strike back, taking the lead for good.
Miller tripled to right center and came home when Moore tripled down the right field line. Two pitches later, Moore scored on a wild pitch for a 4-2 lead. USC Aiken scored its last run of the game in the eighth.
Ben Black picked up the win for Thomas' team while Caleb Smith earned his second save. Taylor Peed worked 6.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out 11.
The Pacers return to action this weekend at Francis Marion in the PBC opener for USC Aiken. First pitch in the series is Friday at 4 p.m., in Florence.
