Box Score GREENWOOD, S.C. – A late run by the No. 12 University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team propelled the squad to a 76-68 victory at Lander Saturday evening.
The Pacers are now 21-3 overall, including a 13-1 record against Peach Belt Conference foes.
DeVontae Wright led everyone with a game-high 19 points in the victory. He canned seven-of-10 shots from the floor and all five foul shots. Ronald Zimmerman added 18 points, including 12 from downtown. Paul Larsen accounted for 12 points and a game-best 11 rebounds while Alvin Brown came off the bench to total 10 points, eight rebounds, a game-high four blocks and a team-high two thefts. Rick Alderman continued his climb to 1,000 career points with seven, leaving him just a handful short of the prestigious mark.
For the game, head coach Vince Alexander's team drilled 23-of-46 shots from the floor (50 percent). However, the team made just four-of-13 from downtown (30.8 percent). Unlike the first time the teams met this season, the Pacers managed to get to the free throw line 35 times, hitting 26 attempts (74.3 percent).
The Pacers held a 44-24 rebounding edge, including a 13-8 mark on the offensive boards. USC Aiken had four blocks to just two by the home team.
USC Aiken fell behind 10-2 in the early going, but quickly embarked on a 6-1 run. Brown hit a jumper and Shane Porchea converted a lay-up prior to Grant Harris hitting a jumper. The Pacers notched their first lead of the contest when Zimmerman hit a three-point shot with 7:46 to go in the half for a 19-18 advantage.
The teams went back-and-forth throughout the rest of the first half, but Larsen's two free throws trimmed USC Aiken's deficit to just one with 1:17 to play before intermission.
Alexander's team grabbed an early lead in the second half, but the Bearcats fought back, taking a two-point lead at 56-54 with 8:55 to play. With the score tied at 61 with at the 4:39 mark, Seilern's lay-up 31 seconds later gave the Pacers the lead for good.
Zimmerman followed Seilern's shot with back-to-back three-point shots, canning both en route to the 69-61 lead.
Lander pulled within four at 72-68 with 47 ticks remaining on the clock, but Wright buried a pair of free throws as did Zimmerman, closing out the scoring in the win.
The Pacers return home to host Flagler Monday at 7:30 p.m., in the Convocation Center.
