Box Score 2 DUE WEST, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team had four student-athletes score in double figures as the squad bested Erskine 72-54 Monday evening.
The Pacers are now 4-3 on the season.
Mariah Durian led the way with a team-best 17 points. Emry Tsitouris notched 14 markers while Kassy Johannsen and Amaura Brandt both chipped in 11 points. Kate Duff and Mackenzie Reese netted eight and seven points, respectively.
Durian and Tsitouris each narrowly missed double-doubles as the pair shared game-high accolades with nine rebounds. Stephanie Ball registered a game-high four steals while Reese's two blocks topped everyone else.
The home squad opened a 3-0 lead, but Tsitouris evened the contest with an old-fashioned three-point play at the 19:16 mark. Trailing 6-5, Durian's jumper started an 8-0 spurt by the visitors, giving the team a 13-6 lead. During the run, Kassy Johannsen netted four points while Durian completed the spurt with a jumper at the 14:56 mark, forcing a time-out.
Although Erskine netted the next two points, the Pacers went on the attack once again. USC Aiken embarked on a 13-0 run over the next four minutes, essentially solidifying the contest. Reese got things going with a jumper off a pass from Durian. Duff scored the next five points, including three from behind the arc. Tsitouris hit a free throw and Durian found the bottom of the net on two before Duff taking a pass from Johannsen and quickly turning it into a three-pointer and a 26-8 advantage with 12:11 to play in the first half.
With the score at 34-15, the squad went on a 7-0 run for the largest lead of the game. Carly Gilreath started things with a free throw. Durian drilled a jumper and later made a free throw before Brandt drilled a deep three-ball. Durian's two charity tosses concluded the first half for USC Aiken up by a 47-23 score.
The Pacers saw their lead trimmed to just 12 with 10:46 to play, but Reese nailed a three-pointer and Tsitouris canned a jumper with 8:12 to go for a 61-46 lead. The squad easily cruised to the 18-point victory.
Head coach Mike Brandt's team managed to get to the charity stripe early and often in the opening half and it paid dividends. USC Aiken opened up a 26-point edge and never looked back. The team led by 24 at the break.
For the game, USC Aiken buried 25-of-61 shots from the floor (41 percent) and hit 16-of-25 from the charity stripe (64 percent). The pacers out-rebounded Erskine 50-41 and held a 15-12 edge in steals. The squad also forced 21 turnovers in the contest.
The Pacers return to action Saturday when they host Livingstone at 1:30 p.m. The game is the first of six straight in the Convocation Center, marking the program's longest home stand since moving to Division II.
