Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory over visiting Lander Tuesday evening in a huge Peach Belt Conference contest. Set scores were 25-22, 25-12 and 25-19.
The Pacers are now 20-6 overall, including an 11-4 record against league foes.
Leading the way for USC Aiken was Taylor Stratton, who accounted for a match-high 15 kills. She also hit .400 in the match. Ashley Diedrich posted 11 kills and led everyone with a match-best 19 digs. She also chipped in a pair of block assists.
Sheila Walsh registered a career-high 51 assists to go along with three kills and three aces. Julia Forster and Hannah Tierney each had nine kills while Aly Johnson chipped in seven.
Defensively, Monica Cardona accounted for 18 digs. Shawn Hotson and Katie Toman posted 14 and 11, respectively.
USC Aiken found itself trailing 8-4 in the opening set, but stormed back, knotting the contest with four straight points. The squad had two kills by Stratton and a pair by Tierney in the run. After the Bearcats scored one, head coach Glen Cox's team embarked on a 7-1 spurt. During the run, Walsh had a pair of service aces while Stratton, Forster and Diedrich all had kills.
The visitors pulled within one at 19-18, but Stratton's kill pushed the margin back to two. Leading 23-22, Diedrich's kill and an attack error by the visitors ended the first set.
The Pacers used the momentum from the first set en route to a 25-12 victory in the second frame. With the score tied at 8-8, an error by Lander sparked a 4-0 run. Johnson added a pair of kills in the run. Cox's team had a 5-0 run later in the stanza and ended the set on another 5-0 spurt.
USC Aiken was tested in the early going of the final set, but a 5-1 run near the midway point allowed the team to net the victory.
The Pacers return to action Thursday when they host Armstrong State at 7 p.m.
