Box Score AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team netted a 5-0 victory at Georgia Southwestern Saturday afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference contest.
The Pacers improve to 4-5-2 overall, including a 2-2-1 mark against league foes.
Megan Smits led the way for head coach Sue Vodicka's team. She led the relentless offensive attack on the Hurricanes by scoring two goals in the first half.
Smits got things going with a goal just 8:33 into the match on a breakaway. She promptly beat the keeper for the 1-0 edge. In the 30th minute, Caroline Gillespie flicked the ball into the box where Smits one-timed it into the back of the net for the second goal of the afternoon.
During the first 45 minutes of action, USC Aiken rocketed 16 shots against the home team's defense, including 15 that were on goal. The Pacers earned seven corner kicks in the first stanza. Due to the outstanding offensive attack, Vodicka's squad allowed just two shots on goal in the first period. However, Nicole Cranny was up to the challenge and easily stopped both shots.
In the 49th minute of play, Jenna Beauregard blasted a shot toward the frame that Chelsee Wright managed to save. However, Beauregard had another chance just a few seconds later and converted the shot from 15-yards out for a 3-0 lead.
Beauregard earned an assist when Tori Caldwell hammered home a shot off a rebound for a four-goal advantage coming at the 54:53 mark.
With just under 17 minutes to play, Caroline Gillespie played the ball on a corner kick. She found Hazel Kelly for a goal, making it 5-0.
For the match, Cranny and Karin Cadwalader combined for the shutout between the pipes for USC Aiken. The two combined for five saves.
Vodicka's team held a 36-6 advantage in shots and a 27-5 margin in shots on goal. Georgia Southwestern had 22 saves in the contest. USC Aiken maintained a 13-0 lead in corner kicks.
The Pacers return to action Monday when they play at Flagler. The match is slated to start at 4 p.m.
