Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team played No. 23 Lander to a 1-1 double-overtime draw Wednesday evening in a Peach Belt Conference contest.
The Pacers are now 3-5-2 on the season, including a 1-2-1 effort in league play.
Head coach Sue Vodicka's team jumped on top with a goal in the seventh minute of action. After earning a corner kick, Caroline Gillespie booted the ball to the back post where Akeyla Furbert jumped and connected with the ball. Furbert's header found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
USC Aiken continued to apply pressure. The team earned another corner kick in the 11th minute and Hannah Allison missed a shot just high. Sarah Moore rocketed a shot that narrowly missed the frame at the 16:11 mark.
The defense was strong as well for the Pacers in the opening stanza. The squad faced 10 shots by the visitors and Nicole Cranny turned away all four shots on frame.
The Bearcats managed to tie the contest in the 51st minute of play and neither team was able to find the back of the net for the remainder of regulation.
In the first overtime, Vodicka's team had the first shot and Allison missed just wide of the target. The Pacers dominated the period, earning four shots but each one narrowly missed the frame.
USC Aiken had momentum at the start of the second overtime session, but the team was unable to register a shot on goal.
For the match, Cranny played all 110 minutes between the pipes and stopped six shots.
The visitors out-shot the Pacers 20-7 and Lander held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. Cranny had six saves compared to one by the Bearcats.
The teams were whistled for 29 fouls and three yellow cards.
The Pacers return to action Saturday at 1 p.m., when they play at Georgia Southwestern.
