USC Aiken Tames Cobras Tuesday Evening, 2-1

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team earned an outstanding 2-1 victory over Coker Tuesday evening in a non-conference affair.

With the win, the Pacers improve to 2-1 on the season.

In the first half, Hannah Allison netted her third goal of the season in the 16th minute of action. Maneuvering between two defenders, Allison turned and rocketed a high-rising shot that found the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.

The Cobras tied the contest two minutes later, but the Pacers continued to push the tempo.

Head coach Sue Vodicka's squad controlled the ball for much of the next few minutes, taking solid chances but not being able to find a second goal. However, that changed in the 31st minute of play when Aubrey Danielson found Megan Smits in the box. Smits booted the ball with her right foot, going across the frame to net USC Aiken's second score of the night.

The score remained the same heading into halftime.

In the final stanza, the Pacers continued to push the tempo, registering seven shots while holding the Cobras to a mere two.

Coker's best chance to tie the contest came late in the frame, but Alli Edens rushed out and smothered the ball before the Cobras' player was able to get a foot on it.

For the match, USC Aiken recorded 18 shots to seven by the visitors. The Pacers also led in corner kicks, 5-4. Between the pipes for USC Aiken, Edens played all 90 minutes and stopped three shots.

"We will take the win," Vodicka said. "Coker is a good team and we did a good job tonight. Our patience was tested and we did well. Overall, we need to finish our chances and put goals away.

"Hannah Allison and Megan Smits continue to play terrific so far this year. Aubrey Danielson, Olivia Stiltner and Caroline Gillespie all made great passes that led to opportunities for us.

"After the match was tied, we found a way to come back and win. It is great to have the victory but now we will turn our attention to our next match."

The Pacers return to action on Friday when they travel to Barton. The match is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
