AIKEN, S.C. – University of South Carolina Aiken golfer Matt Atkins was tabbed to the Capital One Academic NCAA Division II Men's At-Large District Three First-Team on Thursday.
The Capital One Academic All-America program is selected by CoSIDA. As a First-Team member, Atkins is now eligible for Academic All-America consideration.
Atkins garners the honor for the second consecutive year. He went on to claim Academic All-America accolades in the 2011-12 season. Atkins was also tabbed a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar last year.
A senior, Atkins (Owensboro, Ky./Henderson State) currently boasts a 3.708 grade point average as a Business Administration major.
The 2013 Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year, Atkins is leading nationally third-ranked USC Aiken and the Peach Belt Conference in the 2012-13 season with a 73.27 scoring average. Atkins has twice been named Peach Belt Conference Golfer of the Week in the 2012-13 season (Oct. 11 and March 14).
The 2012 First-Team All-American has finished in the top-10 individually in six of USC Aiken's 12 events this season. He has obtained four top-5 finishes.
The 2012 Academic All-American has picked up two individual wins in the 2012-13 season.
The 2013 Peach Belt Conference First-Team selection first claimed individual medalist honors at the 16th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the 6,617-yard, par-70 Palmetto Golf Club. Atkins finished with a three-round 4-under score of 206 (68-68-70) in acquiring individual medalist honors. The 206 allowed him to finish two strokes ahead of Virginia's Mac McLaughlin (71-64-73=208). Augusta State's Maverick Antcliff (70-73-66) and South Carolina's Matthew NeSmith (68-69-72) tied for third at 209.
The 2013 Peach Belt Conference All-Tournament selection also claimed individual medalist honors for USC Aiken at the 2013 Peach Belt Conference Championship at the par-72, 7,057-yard Mountain View Course at Callaway Gardens. Atkins finished his three rounds with a 4-under score of 212 (78-65-69).
Atkins now has three individual wins in his Pacer career. He also claimed top honors at the 2012 NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional at the par-72, 7,064-yard Jones Course at the Rock Barn Golf and Spa. Atkins (Owensboro, Ky./Henderson State) concluded the three rounds of the South/Southeast Regional with a 6-under score of 210.
