AIKEN, S.C. – The nationally 30th-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken men's tennis team closed out its 2013 Peach Belt Conference regular-season campaign with a 5-2 win over No. 32 North Georgia on Tuesday at the USC Aiken Tennis Complex.
In the women's match, the USC Aiken women (10-9, 5-8 PBC) fell 5-2 to the North Georgia women (9-11, 4-9 PBC).
The USC Aiken men (10-6, 4-6 PBC) commenced their victory over the North Georgia men (9-8, 2-8 PBC) by sweeping doubles.
The Pacer tandem of Patrick Stiebinger (Weiden, Germany/Wichita State University) and Max Wichelhaus (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany/Gymnasium Vogelsang) knocked off the nationally 21st-ranked duo of Felipe Friedrich and Matheus Guida, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles.
USC Aiken from there would close out the match with two wins in singles.
Ettore Damiani (Genoa, Italy/University of Genoa) continued his torrid play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over North Georgia's Giovani Santos at No. 3 singles. The win allowed Damiani to close out his Peach Belt Conference campaign with a record of 9-1 in singles. Damiani is currently in the midst of a 14-match winning streak.
USC Aiken's Lucas Gobbi (Santa Bárbara d'Oeste, Brazil/Colegio Politec) bested North Georgia's Sam Gantt 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.
In the women's match, North Georgia took all three doubles matches with USC Aiken claiming its lone points at No. 1 and No. 4 singles.
USC Aiken's Margot Simon (Nantes, France/St. Joseph de Loquidy) defeated Cameron Williams 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, while Shauna Williams (Columbia, S.C./Broward Community College) downed Adalyn Hazelman 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
USC Aiken tennis will next close out its 2013 regular-season by squaring off against Wingate in Wingate, N.C. on Wednesday, April 10. USC Aiken's final road match of the year is set for a 2:30 p.m. start.
The Pacer tennis teams will then conclude their week by competing in the Peach Belt Conference Tennis Championships at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis center in Florence, S.C. The league tennis championships will run Friday, April 12-Sunday, April 14.
