GREENWOOD, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's tennis team claimed a 5-3 Peach Belt Conference victory over Lander on Wednesday afternoon at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center.
In the men's match featuring two top-30 teams, seventh-ranked Lander bested the No. 30 USC Aiken men, 5-1.
The loss for the USC Aiken men (9-5, 3-5 PBC) against Lander (12-1, 8-0 PBC) snapped a three-match winning streak for the Pacers.
The USC Aiken women (10-7, 5-6 PBC) after their win over the Lander women (7-7, 4-6 PBC) have now won two straight matches.
In the women's match, USC Aiken opened its win over Lander by picking up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
The Pacers would go on to win at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 singles to obtain the 5-3 victory.
USC Aiken's Margot Simon (Nantes, France/St. Joseph de Loquidy) defeated Lander's Carolina Lainez 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Giovanna Ramos (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Externato Mater Domus) downed Lander's Marion Courbis 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
USC Aiken's Julia Arruda (Valinhos, Brazil/Anglo Coc Valinhos) defeated Aurelia Ruffat 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
In the men's match, Ettore Damiani (Genoa, Italy/University of Genoa) obtained the lone point for the Pacers at No. 3 singles. Damiani defeated Lander's Adam Jonsson 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
The reigning USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Month has now won 12 straight matches. He is 12-2 overall and 7-1 in Peach Belt Conference action.
Due to expected inclement weather in the area, USC Aiken's scheduled tennis match at Belmont Abbey on Thursday has been cancelled.
The USC Aiken men and women will now close out their week with a home match against Peach Belt Conference foe Georgia College at the USC Aiken Tennis Complex on Saturday, April 6. Things are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
