Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C. - The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team took a pair of Peach Belt Conference games from Lander on Saturday afternoon at J.H. Satcher Field.
The game served as Senior Day for USC Aiken, who honored four student-athletes.
The Pacers (24-20-1, 11-11 PBC) were able to take game one 5-0, and they earned the win in game two, 2-1.
The Pacers closed out the regular-season with the sweep and will next be in action at the Peach Belt Conference Tournament in St. Augustine, Fla. on April 20 and 21.
Game 1: USC Aiken 5, Lander 0
USC Aiken was able to take game one behind a complete-game, two-hit shutout performance from India Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula HS). Kornegay (13-12) struck out 13 Bearcats to eclipse her own single-season strikeout record. Kornegay now has 261 strikeouts on the season.
The Pacers struck first in the game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The inning started off with a single and a stolen base by Kaitlyn White (McAllen, Texas/College of Charleston). White then advanced to third base on an illegal pitch. Victoria Burkett (Gilbert, S.C./Gilbert HS) drove in White on a triple to right-center. Andrea Daring (Ridgeland, S.C./Thomas Heyward Academy) brought Burkett around to score on a single to center field. Cortney Sadler (Bradenton, Fla./State College of Fla., Manatee-Sarasota) drove in the final run of the inning on a double.
USC Aiken added two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Nicole Borden (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) doubled to right center field. Taylor Simmons (North Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester HS) pinch ran for Borden and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Brandy Bossle (North East, Md./Rising Sun HS). White singled to score Simmons and advanced to second base on a throwing error. Lindsey Jones (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta HS) knocked in White on a single down the left-field line to end the scoring in game one.
Three Pacers came away with multiple hits. Daring went 3-for-3 in the game, scoring a run and driving in one.
White and Brittney Williamson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll HS) were the other Pacers with multiple hits. They each had two hits. White scored two runs and drove in another.
No Bearcat was able to secure multiple hits in the game.
Amanda Hamby (2-6) was the loser of game one.
Game 2: USC Aiken 2, Lander 1
USC Aiken was able to win game two in comeback fashion, 2-1.
Lander struck first with a single run in the top of the fourth inning. The Bearcats were able to score on an RBI single by Bethany Beggs. Beggs drove in Brittney Sheriff from second base.
The Pacers came back with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game. Burkett singled to the shortstop to reach base. She advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sadler drove in Burkett from second base on a double to left-center.
USC Aiken scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth. White reached base on a bunt single and stole second to move into scoring position. Shannon Traylor (Prosperity, S.C./Mid-Carolina HS) sacrificed White to third. Jones then singled to right-center to score the eventual winning run for the Pacers.
Both Lander and USC Aiken ended game two with 5 hits. Sheriff was the only player in the game with multiple hits, going 2-for-2.
Taylor Morgan (Chapin, S.C./Chapin HS) earned the win for USC Aiken. Morgan (11-8) pitched the first five and one-thirds innings before being spelled by Kornegay. Kornegay garnered her first save of the season in her sixth relief appearance.
Mary Katherine Pegram took the loss in game two. Pegram (6-11) gave up two runs in six innings of work.
