SAVANNAH, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken tennis teams swept Peach Belt Conference foe Flagler in a neutral site match on Monday, April 1 at Bacon Park.
The nationally 30th-ranked USC Aiken men (8-4, 3-4 PBC) bested the 31st-ranked Flagler men (4-10, 2-6 PBC), 5-4, while the USC Aiken women (9-7, 4-6 PBC) bested the Flagler women (3-12, 3-6 PBC), 6-3.
In the men's match, USC Aiken entered singles with a 2-1 advantage after wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
The Pacers and Saints would split the singles matches, but USC Aiken's advantage in doubles would be enough to help the Pacers claim the 5-4 win.
USC Aiken's Ettore Damiani (Genoa, Italy/University of Genoa) won his 10th straight singles match with his 7-5, 6-4 win over Flagler's Inigo Landaluce at No. 3 singles.
Lucas Gobbi (Santa Bárbara d'Oeste, Brazil/Colegio Politec) picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win for USC Aiken over David Espinosa at No. 5 singles, while Bruno Orlandini (Araraquara, SP, Brazil/Longwood) obtained a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lennart Wemcken at No. 6 singles.
In the women's match, USC Aiken also entered singles play with a 2-1 advantage with the Pacers winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. USC Aiken's Giovanna Ramos (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Externato Mater Domus) and Shauna Williams (Columbia, S.C./Broward Community College) downed Flagler's Hanna Goettsching and Thaisa Pereira, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles.
The Pacers would go on to claim wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
USC Aiken's Julia Arruda (Valinhos, Brazil/Anglo Coc Valinhos) had the biggest win on the day in singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Flagler's Krista Ingrilli at No. 5 singles.
The Pacer men will next welcome in-state non-conference foe Erskine to the USC Aiken Tennis Complex for a 3 p.m. match on Tuesday, April 2.
The Pacer men and women will then hit the road again on Wednesday, April 3 for a league road match against Lander in Greenwood, S.C. Things are slated to commence at 3 p.m.
After a road trip to Belmont Abbey on Thursday, April 4 (2:30 p.m.), the USC Aiken men and women will close out their week with a home match against Peach Belt Conference foe Georgia College at the USC Aiken Tennis Complex on Saturday, April 6. Things are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
