USC Aiken Claims Impressive 94-71 NCAA Tournament Win Over Lenoir-Rhyne

MORROW, Ga. – The regionally fifth-seeded University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team claimed a dominating 94-71 victory over regionally fourth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne in the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Southeast Regional quarterfinals at the Athletics & Fitness Center on the campus of Clayton State.

USC Aiken (22-7) has now claimed an NCAA Tournament victory in each of the last three seasons. 

The regional quarterfinal victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (19-10) moves the Pacers on to the semifinal round of the Southeast Regional where they will face off against national No. 1 and regional top-seeded Clayton State (30-0) at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 16.

The winner of the USC Aiken-Clayton State semifinal will advance to the regional championship game at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 18. 

USC Aiken rushed out to a 9-1 advantage over the course of the first two minutes of the game. 

With just over 8:30 to play in the first half, the Pacers had pushed their lead to 17 points at 30-13. The Pacers still owned a 17-point lead at 39-22 with under five minutes to play in the opening stanza. 

The Pacers would enter the halftime break with a 21-point lead at 52-31. 

USC Aiken concluded the first half shooting 63.6 percent (21-for-33) as a team. The Pacers knocked down 60 percent (6-of-10) of their 3-point attempts in the inaugural half of action. 

Three Pacers combined to score 46 of USC Aiken's 52 points in the opening half.

Daniela Tarailo (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point HS) led the Pacers in the first half with 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Tarailo knocked down five 3-pointers in the first half.

Porsha Martin (Douglasville, Ga./South Paulding HS) closed out the first half with 16 points, while Mackenzie Reese (Madison, Wis./Edgewood HS) came off the bench to score 11 points in the first half. 

USC Aiken opened the first three minutes of the second half on a 10-1 run to push their lead to 30 points at 62-32.

The Pacers would continue to dominate the rest of the second half en route to their eventual 23-point victory.

USC Aiken closed out the resounding NCAA Tournament victory over Lenoir-Rhyne shooting a scorching 60 percent (36-for-60) from the field as a team. The Pacers shot 50 percent (7-for-14) from beyond the arc as a team in the game. USC Aiken shot 88.2 percent (15-for-17) from the free throw line as a team in the contest. 

Lenoir-Rhyne closed out its season-ending loss shooting 40.6 percent (26-for-64) from the field as a team. The Bears connected on 47.6 percent (10-for-21) of their 3-point attempts as a team. Lenoir-Rhyne shot a poor 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from the free throw line as a team.

Five different Pacers finished in double figures with Reese claiming a career-best 20 points in the contest. Reese, who was 8-for-12 from the field in the game, also had three rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Tarailo only took one shot in the second half in ending her evening with her 19 first half points. Tarailo, who was 5-of-5 from beyond the arc in the game, also had four assists and one steal.

Martin only added two more points in the second half to finish with 18. She also had six rebounds, two assists and a steal. 

Kassy Johannsen (Broomfield, Colo./Holy Family HS) finished the Pacer victory with a career-high 12 points. She was 5-for-6 from the field in the game. Johannsen also had five rebounds. 

The final Pacer in double figures was Mia Antoine (Stone Mountain, Ga./Dominion Christian HS), who ended her evening with 10 points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Brittany Hill (Mechanicsville, Va./Quinnipiac) did not score in the game, but the Pacer point guard did dish out a game-high 10 assists to go along with her three steals. 

Jazmine Charles and Danielle Bongiorno both scored 16 to lead Lenoir-Rhyne in its loss.
