Pacer Winning Streak Comes to Close in Road PBC Loss to Armstrong

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team had its six-game winning streak halted in a 90-87 Peach Belt Conference road loss to Armstrong Atlantic State on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.

Despite the loss, USC Aiken (15-6, 11-3 PBC) remains in control in the Peach Belt Conference East Division. The Pacers are also still in control in the race for the Peach Belt Conference regular-season crown after Montevallo's loss to Clayton State on Saturday. The Pacers own a half-game lead over West Division-leading Montevallo (15-7, 11-4 PBC).

USC Aiken led by as many as 11 points in the first half over Armstrong (13-7, 9-4 PBC).

The Pacers entered the halftime break with a 53-47 advantage. 

Armstrong would own a nine-point lead over the Pacers with 8:35 remaining in the game, but USC Aiken would battle back to lead by two at 87-85 with 39 seconds remaining in the contest.

Armstrong's Aric Miller would give the Pirates the lead back at 88-87 after he hit a 3-pointer with 17 seconds to go in the game. Antroine Williford would then hit two free throws with 10 seconds to play to leave Armstrong with a 90-87 lead.

The Pacers had a chance to tie the contest in the final seconds, but Ronald Zimmerman's (Columbia, S.C./Spring Valley HS) 3-point attempt just rimmed out to give the Pirates the three-point victory. 

Four Pacers finished in double figures in the game with Paul Larsen (Mooresville, N.C./Mercer) leading the way with 23 points and a career-high tying 14 rebounds. Larsen claimed half of his 14 boards in the game on the offensive glass. 

Larsen with his 23 points and 14 caroms in the game now has eight double-doubles on the 2012-13 season. 

Re'mon Nelson (Columbus, Ohio/Canal Winchester HS) ended the Pacer loss to Armstrong with 20 points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal.

DeVontae Wright (Goose Creek, S.C./The Citadel) concluded the game for USC Aiken with 15 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals.

The final Pacer in double figures, Santoine Butler (Augusta, Ga./Gardner-Webb) ended his afternoon with 13 points and seven rebounds. He also had a game-high tying five assists.

Armstrong's Miller led all in the game with 39 points. He was one of three Pirates in double figures.

USC Aiken closed out the game shooting 43.1 percent (31-for-72) as a team. Armstrong shot 47.5 percent (28-for-59) from the field as a team in the game.

Neither team shot well from beyond the arc with the Pacers shooting 35 percent (7-for-20) and the Pirates shooting 30.4 percent (7-for-23) as a team.

The Pacers owned a 47-36 rebounding advantage in the game with the Pacers claiming 22 offensive rebounds as a team.

USC Aiken will next stay on the road to face off against Peach Belt Conference foe Flagler in St. Augustine, Fla. on Thursday, Feb. 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
