Carson-Newman Upsets Fifth-Ranked Pacers

AIKEN, S.C. – The nationally fifth-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team suffered its first loss of the 2013 season in an 8-0 loss to Carson-Newman on Friday evening at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

USC Aiken (3-1) closed out its loss to Carson-Newman (3-2) with six hits as a team. Carson-Newman had 11 hits as a team in its upset victory over the Pacers.

Freshman Tyler Moore (Evans, Ga./Evans HS) was the only Pacer to procure multiple hits in the game. He finished USC Aiken's loss with two hits.

In total, five different Pacers had at least one hit in the game.

Carson-Newman had three players conclude its win with multiple hits with Brandon Roberts, Zach Long and Bryan Everhart claiming two hits.

Six different Pacers saw action on the mound on Friday with starter Ryan Milewski (West Boylston, Mass./West Boylston HS) suffering the loss on the hill. Milewski pitched five innings, striking out three.

Carson-Newman starter Chris Armstrong claimed the win to improve to 1-1 on the year. Armstrong dealt 6.1 innings, striking out four and allowing only three hits.

Ryan Fillers pitched the final 2.2 innings of the contest for Carson-Newman to claim his first save of the year.

USC Aiken and Carson-Newman will continue their three-game series with a 1 p.m. contest at Roberto Hernandez Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 9. The series will close with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, Feb. 10.
