PEMBROKE, N.C. – The nationally 44th-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken women's tennis team obtained its first Peach Belt Conference victory of the year in a 7-2 road win over UNC Pembroke on Sunday at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
USC Aiken (3-1, 1-1 PBC) opened its win over UNC Pembroke (2-1, 0-1 PBC) by garnering victory in two out of the three doubles matches. The Pacers won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
The Pacer duo of Giovanna Ramos (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Externato Mater Domus) and Franziska Regel (Hamburg, Germany/Gymnasium Farmsen) won, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles over UNC Pembroke's tandem of Leigh-Anne McAfee and Shelby Bickel.
USC Aiken earned victory in five of the six singles flights.
In a battle of two of the top-20 regionally-ranked players, USC Aiken's regionally 19th-ranked Margot Simon (Nantes, France/St. Joseph de Loquidy) downed UNC Pembroke's regionally 20th-ranked Mia Winterbottom 6-2, 0-6, 7-6 (7-5).
USC Aiken will next return to the friendly confines of the USC Aiken Tennis Complex for the first of five straight home matches against non-conference foe Queens at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15.
