Kornegay Surpasses 500 Strikeouts; Pacers Drop Two in Extra Innings at Queens

CHARLOTTE – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team was unable to claim victory in its first road doubleheader of the 2013 season, falling twice to Queens in extra innings on Sunday afternoon at Park Road Park.

Queens (4-5) took a 1-0 eight-inning win in game one before earning the sweep with a 3-2 victory over USC Aiken (1-3) in eight innings in game two.

USC Aiken will next stay on the road to face off against West Georgia in Carrollton, Ga. on Wednesday, Feb. 13. The first game of the scheduled doubleheader is set to get underway at 2 p.m.

Game One: Queens 1, USC Aiken 0 (Eight Innings)

The game scoreless in the bottom of the eighth inning, Queens scored to take the narrow 1-0 victory.

The two teams combined for just five hits in the first game with USC Aiken claiming two hits and Queens finishing their win with three hits.

Sarah Montei (Summerville, S.C./Summerville HS) and Brittney Williamson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll HS) acquired the Pacer hits in game one.

USC Aiken pitcher India Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula HS) pitched the whole game and was once again strong in the circle in the first game. Kornegay (0-2) struck out 10 Royals and allowed no earned runs.

Kornegay now has 28 strikeouts in the 2013 season. The 28 strikeouts allowed her to move past 500 strikeouts in her career. USC Aiken's all-time leader in strikeouts now has 507 strikeouts in her career.

Kornegay is only the 13th softball player in Peach Belt Conference history with 500 or more strikeouts in their career.

Queens pitcher Lyndey McCurry claimed the win in the circle in game one.

Game Two: Queens 3, USC Aiken 2 (Eight Innings)

USC Aiken plated the first run of the game in the second game of the twinbill.

With runners at first and second in the top of the fourth, USC Aiken's Marisa Oldaker (Swansea, S.C./Florida State College at Jacksonville) brought home Williamson on a fielder's choice RBI.

One inning later, USC Aiken extended its lead to 2-0. Montei kicked off the inning for USC Aiken by singling to left field. Montei was then promptly placed into scoring position by a sacrifice bunt by Lindsey Jones (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta HS).

Nicole Borden (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) then doubled in Montei to garner the Pacers the 2-0 advantage.

Queens would cut the Pacer lead in half in the bottom of the fifth with one run. In the bottom of the sixth, Queens would plate another to tie the game at 2-all.

Neither team would score in the seventh to send the game into extra innings once again. Queens would then plate a run in the bottom of the eighth to take another narrow one-run extra inning win.

Montei led the Pacers in game two with two hits. She was 2-for-3 in total with one run scored.

The Pacers overall out-hit Queens, 6-2, in game two.

Taylor Morgan (Chapin, S.C./Chapin HS) pitched the whole game in suffering the loss in the circle for USC Aiken in game two. Morgan (1-1) struck out 11 Royals and allowed just the two hits.

Ashley Rollins pitched the final 3.2 innings to claim the win in the circle for Queens in game two.
