Box Score FLORENCE, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team registered its second consecutive upset at the Peach Belt Conference Championship, upending No. 2 Flagler by a 3-1 score and securing a berth in the league championship match. Set scores were 20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23.
The Pacers are now 19-12 on the season.
The Pacers were led by
Endea Ellison's match-high 14 kills. She hit .565 as she totaled just one error in 23 attacks.
Ashley Diedrich hammered home 10 kills while
Leah Rodgers and
Hannah Tierney each found the court eight times for kills.
Sheila Walsh dished out a match-high 24 assists to go along with a match-best three aces. She also chipped in seven digs for good measure.
Amanda Bologna nearly had a double-double with 20 assists and nine digs while assisting on one block.
Defensively, rookie
Katie Toman posted a team-high 16 digs while
Monica Cardona and
Danielle Mercer added 14 and 10, respectively. At the net, Tierney and
Ashley Lind each accounted for three blocks.
Overall, the team posted 58 kills while hitting 173.
After dropping the first set, head coach
Glenn Cox's team found itself trailing 15-11 in the second frame. However, an error put the ball back in the Pacers' court. Tierney and Walsh responded with back-to-back kills, making it 15-14.
The team trailed 18-15, but a spurt by the designated visitors gave the team the lead for good. Tierney hammered home a kill and an error made it 18-17. Diedrich powered home back-to-back kills for a 19-18 lead. After a time-out, the teams traded the next four points.
Tied at 20, Rodgers and Walsh scored back-to-back points for a 22-20 edge. An error by the Saints made it 23-20. Ellison registered a kill and the Pacers clinched the set on an attack error.
In the third frame, Flagler led 12-11 before Ellison posted back-to-back kills for a 13-12 edge. Lind's kill pushed the margin to two. Lind and Bologna blocked a shot and an ace by Mercer made it 16-12.
The Saints would pull within three at 20-17, but Rodgers and Diedrich slammed home kills for a 22-17 edge. Cox's team won the set on a kill by Ellison.
In the fourth frame, USC Aiken trailed 7-6, but a kill by Ellison knotted the contest. It sparked a 4-0 run by the No. 6 seed.
Leading 12-11, Tierney pushed the margin to two with a kill. Walsh then split the defense for an ace. Diedrich recorded a kill, which forced a time-out.
Tierney blocked a shot and followed it with a kill for a 17-11 edge.
Flagler knotted the contest at 19, but the Pacers would not allow the Saints to take the lead.
Diedrich took a pass from Cardona and slammed it home for a 20-19 lead. Rodgers followed it up with a kill before an attack error by the Saints made it 22-19.
Flagler pulled within one at 22-21, but an error pushed the Pacers' lead to two. The Saints tied it at 23, but Diedrich and Ellison registered back-to-back kills to secure the victory.
USC Aiken takes on No. 1 seed Armstrong tomorrow in the finals of the Peach Belt Conference Championship. The match is slated for a 2 p.m. start at Francis Marion. The winner receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
