MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico – The University of
South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team picked up a pair
of victories at the 2013 Mayaguez Basketball Classic this
weekend.
The Pacers are now 2-1 on the season.
After dropping the season-opening game Friday night to
P.R.-Bayamon 60-55, head coach Vince Alexander's team bounced
back with 73-52 victory over P.R.-Piedras Saturday. The squad
notched an 84-46 win over P.R.-Mayaguez Sunday afternoon.
USC Aiken opened the game with a strong 18-3 run over the first 10
minutes of play and never looked back in the contest. For the game,
the Pacers connected on 48.1 percent of their shots from the floor.
Leading the way for Alexander's team was Ronald Zimmerman,
who connected on eight shots, including five from downtown, for a
game-best 23 points. Jesse Seilern totaled 11 points while Grant
Harris and Shane Porchea hit for eight apiece.
Alvin Brown swatted away nine shots while Zimmerman totaled three
steals. DeVontae Wright and Harris each dished out five assists in
the 19-point victory.
Against P.R.-Mayaguez, the squad jumped out to a 20-point margin
at the break and never looked back.
Paul Larsen scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds while Kinley
Branch came off the bench to hit for 16 points and pull down seven
rebounds.
Brown and Wright shared game-high accolades with 10 rebounds
apiece. Brown proved to be a force on the inside, blocking four
shots. Seilern accounted for 13 points and eight boards.
For the game, USC Aiken canned 52.6 percent of its shots from the
floor and buried 17 charity tosses while cruising to the win.
In the opener against P.R.-Bayamon, Larsen and Brown shared
team-high honors with 13 points apiece. Wright added 12 while
Zimmerman chipped in 10. Larsen snared eight rebounds while Wright
had five steals.
The Pacers return to action Tuesday when they open their home
slate with a 7 p.m. game against Allen.
