USC Aiken Earns Draw With League-Leading Clayton State

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C.Hannah Allison struck for two second-half goals, helping the University of South Carolina Aiken overcome a 3-1 deficit to tie Clayton State Saturday evening in a Peach Belt Conference match-up.

The Pacers are now 8-7-1 overall and 3-5-2 against league foes.

After falling behind 1-0 in the 32nd minute, head coach Sue Vodicka's team netted the equalizer with just eight seconds remaining before intermission.

A foul was called just inside the midfield stripe and Kyle Maguire played the ball into the box where Kim Beyer flicked it into the back of the net, making the score 1-1 with eight seconds remaining in the opening period.

The Lakers built a 3-1 advantage by the 66th minute after two solid scores. However, the Pacers would not give up.

Allison was getting ready to come off the field for a brief rest when Jenna Beauregard found her racing down the right side of the pitch. Allison calmly collected the pass and rocketed home a shot to make it 3-2 at the 76:20 mark.

Less than three minutes later, Haley Pipkin weaved her way through a pack of Lakers and found Allison in the box. Allison slipped the ball past a defender and the keeper, knotting the score and forcing overtime.

In the first extra period, USC Aiken had the lone match in the 10-minute session. However, Charlotte McCormack was able to stop it, forcing a second period.

Despite being out-shot 3-1 in the second extra frame, Vodicka's team nearly pulled off the victory in the waning seconds. Beauregard took a corner kick that found Beyer in the box. Beyer played it to the right side of the frame and the ball went between the legs of a defender, but missed the frame by six inches.

Allison led her team with four shots, three of which were on goal. Beyer totaled three shots while Megan Smits had two. Beauregard, Joi Chrishon, Aubrey Danielson and Heaven Tylee all had a shot in the contest.

Melissa Westphal played all 110 minutes between the pipes, stopping seven shots en route to the tie.

For the match, USC Aiken was out-shot 20-13, but held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The squads combined for 37 fouls and three yellow cards.

The Pacers return to action Wednesday at UNC Pembroke. The match is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
