Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of South Carolina Aiken forced overtime but came up just short in a 3-2 loss at Montevallo Saturday evening in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer showdown.
The Pacers fall to 8-6 overall and 3-4 against conference competition.
In the 36th minute of action, Megan Smits continued her stellar season by netting the opening score of the match off a pass from Caroline Gillespie.
Head coach Sue Vodicka's team carried the 1-0 lead into the second period.
However, the home squad netted the equalizer in the 55th minute and took the lead off a double assist in the 69th minute of play.
USC Aiken fought back and Hannah Allison found Heaven Tylee for the tying score at the 85:04 mark of the contest.
Neither team could score in the final 4:56 of regulation despite the Pacers pushing forward. At the 89:27 mark, Gillespie took a corner kick and Allison had a chance to net the game-winning goal, but her shot sailed just wide of the frame.
Then, Montevallo scored in the 94th minute to conclude the match.
For the contest, USC Aiken held a 15-11 advantage in shots, but Montevallo maintained a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
Gillespie and Smits led the team with four shots apiece while Olivia Stiltner added three. Gillespie placed three on goal while Smits totaled two on target.
Alli Edens played all 93:37 between the pipes, making three saves.
The Pacers return to action Wednesday at 6 p.m., when they play host to Armstrong in a key Peach Belt Conference contest.
