North Georgia Upsets No. 3 USC Aiken

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The nationally third-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team was upset by North Georgia, 57-50, in Peach Belt Conference action on Monday evening at Memorial Hall Gymnasium.

The loss snaps a six-game winning streak for the Pacers in the series between the two institutions.

USC Aiken (13-2, 6-2 PBC) is now tied with Augusta State (12-2, 6-2 PBC) for first place in the Peach Belt Conference East Division.

The Pacers opened their first road loss of the 2012-13 regular-season on an 8-2 run over the course of the inaugural six minutes of the contest.

USC Aiken would still own a slight one-point 17-16 advantage with 2:10 remaining in the first half, but the Saints would close the half on an eight-point run to take a 24-17 lead into the halftime break.

USC Aiken finished the first half shooting 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from the floor as a team. North Georgia (6-9, 4-4 PBC) shot 38.5 percent (10-for-26) from the field as a team in the first stanza.

North Georgia would extend its lead to as many as 16 points in the second half, but USC Aiken would battle its way back into the contest to trail by only six at 49-43 with 4:23 left in the game. After a long Daniela Tarailo 3-pointer a little over a minute later the North Georgia lead was just four points at 50-46.

USC Aiken would not be able to get any closer in its eventual seven-point loss to North Georgia.

Two Pacers finished in double figures in the game with Porsha Martin leading the way with 14 points. Tarailo added 11 of her own.

Martin (Douglasville, Ga./South Paulding HS) also had a team-best six rebounds to go along with two assists and two steals. Tarailo (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point HS) had four rebounds and three assists in the contest.

Pacer point guard Brittany Hill (Mechanicsville, Va./Quinnipiac) finished the USC Aiken loss with seven points, six assists, six steals, three rebounds and one block.

USC Aiken's Tiffani Moody (Raleigh, N.C./Ohio Valley University) concluded her efforts in the game with eight points, four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal.

North Georgia All-American Jaymee Carnes closed out the Saint win with a double-double with 18 points and 18 rebounds. Carnes was one of three Saints in double figures.

As a team, USC Aiken ended its evening shooting 31.3 percent (21-for-67) from the field. The Pacers hit just four of their 25 (16 percent) 3-point attempts as a team in the game. USC Aiken was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.

North Georgia closed out its win over the third-ranked Pacers shooting 42.6 percent from the field (20-for-47) as a team. The Saints hit 50 percent (5-of-10) of their 3-point attempts as a team in the contest.

North Georgia shot a dismal 37.5 percent (12-for-32) from the free throw line in the game as a team.

USC Aiken will next return home to face off against Georgia College at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24 at the Convocation Center. The contest will serve as USC Aiken's final game against Peach Belt Conference West Division opposition in the 2012-13 regular-season.
