Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team opened its 2012 Peach Belt Conference campaign with a 2-0 shutout win over Georgia College at the "Pacer Pit."
USC Aiken (2-4-1, 1-0 PBC) and Georgia College (3-3, 0-1 PBC) entered intermission even at 0-0, but the Pacers changed things heavily in their favor in the 50th-minute when Aubrey Danielson (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman HS) scored her first goal of the year.
Danielson's goal was made possible after a Courtney Szabo (Lexington, S.C./Lexington HS) left-footed shot from just outside the 18-yard box was saved by Georgia College starting goalkeeper Annie Stephens. Danielson opportunistically claimed the rebound and then deftly placed the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Pacers would strike again in the 87th-minute when Megan Smits (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson HS) blistered a shot from 30 yards out into the back of the Georgia College net. Heaven Tylee (Manassas, Va./Osbourne Park HS) picked up the assist on Smits' goal.
Georgia College ended the match with a 22-14 shot advantage, but in the second half USC Aiken out-shot the Bobcats, 9-5.
Pacer goalkeeper Alli Edens (Lexington, S.C./College of Charleston) saved 11 Bobcat shots en route to the clean sheet.
Both teams took four corner kicks in the match.
USC Aiken will next hit the road to square off against new Peach Belt Conference foe Young Harris at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19 in Young Harris, Ga. The contest will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
