Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – An 86th-minute goal helped lead Wingate to a narrow 1-0 victory over the University of South Carolina Aiken women's soccer team on Monday evening at the "Pacer Pit."
The two teams entered intermission even at 0-0. The Pacers held a 9-3 shot advantage in the first half.
USC Aiken (1-3-1) had the two best chances in the first half, hitting the post on one shot and forcing Wingate (3-0-1) goalkeeper Miriam Boucher into an incredible save in the latter minutes of the first stanza.
The score would remain even until the 86th-minute when Wingate's Jade Montgomery scored off an assist from Victoria Sneyd. The goal was Montgomery's fifth of the year.
USC Aiken would finish its narrow loss to Wingate on Monday evening with a 13-10 shot advantage in the contest. Both teams had four corner kick opportunities.
Alli Edens (Lexington, S.C./College of Charleston) made four saves in net for the Pacers. Boucher ended the match with two saves.
Caroline Gillespie (Moore, S.C./JL Mann HS) and Megan Smits (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson HS) led the Pacers in their loss with three shots each.
USC Aiken will next make the short drive to Orangeburg, S.C. to take on NCAA Division I and in-state foe South Carolina State. The Pacers and Bulldogs will be meeting for the first time at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12.
USC Aiken will end its week and open its 2012 Peach Belt Conference campaign with a 7 p.m. home tilt against Georgia College on Saturday, Sept. 15. The Georgia College match is the first of six straight league encounters for the Pacers.
