AIKEN, S.C. – University of South Carolina Aiken head golf coach Michael Carlisle released the 2012-13 Pacer golf schedule on Thursday, June 7, 2012.
The 2012-13 USC Aiken golf schedule features 11 regular-season tournaments that will prepare the Pacers for the 2013 Peach Belt Conference Championship and 2013 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship.
"We are looking forward to this schedule next year," noted Carlisle. "We play some great teams on some fantastic and famous golf courses. We believe that a strong schedule like this helps us to prepare to compete in the postseason in pursuit of another NCAA title."
Just weeks after the course plays host to the 2012 PGA Championship, USC Aiken will commence its 2012 fall schedule by playing in the Invitational at the Ocean Course at the par-72 Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C. The event hosted by the College of Charleston will feature one round each day from Sept. 9, 2012-Sept. 11, 2012.
USC Aiken will head back to Kiawah Island, S.C. shortly thereafter to play host to the Ninth Annual Kiawah Island Invitational. The tournament will be contested on Monday, Sept. 17 and Tuesday, Sept. 18.
The Kiawah Island Invitational will take place at the par-72 Cougar Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C. Designed by Gary Player, the course was rated at "4.5 stars" by Golf Digest. The Pacers are three-time winners of the event. USC Aiken senior Taylor Welborn (LaGrange, Ga./Darton) claimed individual medalist honors at the 2011 Kiawah Island Invitational.
The Pacers will then open the month of October by playing in Akron's Firestone Invitational at the par-72 Firestone Country Club. The tournament will be played Monday, Oct. 8-Tuesday, Oct. 9. USC Aiken will be playing in the Firestone Invitational for the second consecutive year.
USC Aiken will close out the fall portion of its schedule by participating in Georgia State's AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic at the par-72 Berkeley Hills Country Club in Duluth, Ga. The tournament will be contested on Monday, Oct. 15 and Tuesday, Oct. 16. USC Aiken is playing in the event for the first time in the 2012-13 season.
The Pacers will begin the spring portion of its 2012-13 campaign by playing in the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate at the par-72 Wexford Plantation Course in Hilton Head Island, S.C. The event hosted by Francis Marion will be played Monday, Feb. 18-Tuesday, Feb. 19. The Pacers are two-time winners (2006 and 2009) of the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate.
USC Aiken will then travel to Salisbury, N.C. to play in Catawba's Richard Rendleman Invitational at the par-71 Country Club of Salisbury. The Richard Rendleman Invitational will be held on Monday, March 4 and Tuesday, March 5. USC Aiken last won the Rendleman team crown in the 2006-07 season.
The Pacers will play host to the 16th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par-70 Palmetto Golf Club on Monday, March 11 and Tuesday, March 12. The Pacers are four-time (2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009) winners of their annual home tournament.
USC Aiken will head to Eatonton, Ga. next to compete in the Bobcat Invitational. The tournament hosted by Georgia College will be held on Monday, May 18 and Tuesday, May 19 at the par-70 Cuscowilla Golf Resort on Lake Oconee.
After the Bobcat Invitational, USC Aiken will head to Greenwood, S.C. to defend its team crown at the Bearcat Golf Classic. The Pacers won Lander's home tournament at the par-72 Greenwood Country Club in 2012 with a three-round team tally of 8-under 856 (290-281-285).
The 2012 Bearcat Golf Classic will take place Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26 at the Greenwood Country Club.
USC Aiken will close out the regular season portion of its 2012-13 season by participating in Augusta State's Insperity Augusta State Invitational April 5-7 at the par-72 Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
USC Aiken reached as high as No. 1 nationally during the 2011-12 season. In total, the Pacers finished second or better in five of their 13 tournaments. The Pacers claimed the team title at Lander's Bearcat Golf Classic.
Two Pacers claimed individual victories during the 2011-12 season with Welborn starting the year for the Pacers by winning the Kiawah Island Invitational. Matt Atkins claimed individual medalist honors at the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional.
USC Aiken's strong campaign led to berths in both the NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional and the 2012 NCAA Division II National Championship.
USC Aiken got through the stroke play portion of the NCAA Division II National Championship by finishing seventh, which paired them against eventual National Champion Nova Southeastern in the quarterfinals of the match play portion of the national championship.
Both JP Solis (Morelia, Mexico/Lico Morelia) and Matt Atkins (Owensboro, Ky./Henderson State) were selected to the Peach Belt Conference Men's Golf All-Conference Team. Atkins also earned a spot on the Peach Belt Conference Men's Golf All-Academic Team.
Atkins garnered other awards as well as he was named to the Capital One Academic NCAA Division II Men's At-Large All-America Second-Team. He was a Division II PING First-Team All-America selection.
