AIKEN, S.C. – University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball eighth-year head coach Vince Alexander released the 2012-13 Pacer men's basketball schedule on Wednesday, June 20, 2012.
The 2012-13 USC Aiken men's basketball schedule features a strong non-conference schedule along with the always extremely tough Peach Belt Conference slate. The Pacers will play 14 regular season games at the Convocation Center this season.
"Once again we have a challenging non-conference schedule which we feel will prepare us for the always tough Peach Belt Conference," remarked Alexander. "We are looking forward to getting things rolling as we look to continue the positive momentum from our championship-winning season in 2011-12."
For the third consecutive season, USC Aiken will open its regular season at home against Voorhees. The Pacers have easily downed Voorhees to start the past two seasons. The Pacers and Tigers are slated to commence the 2012-13 Pacer regular season at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
A little under a week later, USC Aiken and Winston-Salem State will meet for the first time ever on the hardwood. The Pacers and Rams will contest their first-ever meeting against one another at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 19 at the Convocation Center. Nine days later, the two will meet again when the Pacers travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to tangle with the Rams at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
USC Aiken will then open the month of December by traveling to Columbia, S.C. to take on Benedict at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1. USC Aiken is 5-3 all-time against Benedict, having won the last four in the series.
The Pacers will welcome Mount Olive to the Convocation Center at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6. The Pacers and Trojans will be meeting for the first time since 2008.
After a week off to focus on exams, USC Aiken will open Peach Belt Conference play at home against UNC Pembroke on Saturday, Dec. 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Two days later, USC Aiken will hit the road to face off against league foe Francis Marion at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 17 in Florence, S.C.
USC Aiken will then close out its games before the Holiday break by welcoming CSRA rival Paine to the Convocation Center on Wednesday, Dec. 19. The two programs are meeting for the first time since 1997. Tip-off in the rivalry renewal is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
USC Aiken will conclude the non-conference and 2012 portion of its schedule at home against King at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 30. The Pacers and Tornado will be meeting for the third time in the last four seasons. The two programs are 1-1 all-time against one another.
The Pacers will open the 2013 portion of its schedule with two consecutive road PBC games. The Pacers will first travel to Americus, Ga. to tangle with Georgia Southwestern at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3. Two days later, USC Aiken will travel to Columbus, Ga. to face off against Columbus State at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5.
USC Aiken will close the rest of January by playing five of its final seven games of the month inside the friendly confines of the Convocation Center. The first seven games of the month in total are all against PBC West Division competition.
The Pacers will welcome Montevallo to the Convocation Center at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12. USC Aiken hosts Clayton State at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16.
The final conference games of January for the Pacers will see the Pacers travel to the northern part of Georgia for league contests against Young Harris (7:30 p.m. – Jan. 19) and North Georgia (7:30 p.m. – Jan. 21).
USC Aiken's final three contests in the opening month of 2013 will be played at the Convocation Center. The Pacers will first face its final PBC West foe of the regular season in Georgia College at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24 at the Convocation Center.
Two days after facing off against the Bobcats, USC Aiken will square off against Francis Marion for the second time in the 2012-13 season at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26. The Pacers will close out their three-game homestand with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Flagler on Thursday, Jan. 31.
The second month of 2013 commences with USC Aiken traveling to Christenberry Fieldhouse in Augusta, Ga. to renew acquaintances with rival Augusta State. The Pacers and Jaguars will open their two-game regular season series with a 7:30 p.m. game on Saturday, Feb. 2.
The USC Aiken-Augusta State game is part of a stretch that will see the Pacers start February with four consecutive road conference games. After Augusta State, USC Aiken travels to Greenwood, S.C. to take on Lander at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6.
The Pacers will then travel to Savannah, Ga. to square off against Armstrong Atlantic State at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9. The four-game road swing will close with the Pacers facing off against Flagler in St. Augustine, Fla. on Thursday, Feb. 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
USC Aiken will conclude its 2012-13 regular season with three of its final four games played inside the Convocation Center. Lander will first visit at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16. A week later, USC Aiken will host Armstrong at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23.
The Pacers will close out their 2012-13 regular season home schedule with a 7:30 p.m. contest against rival Augusta State. USC Aiken has claimed all the games at home in the series since the opening of the Convocation Center prior to the start of the 2007-08 season. The contest will serve as Senior Night for the Pacers.
The 2012-13 regular season will close for USC Aiken in Pembroke, N.C. on Saturday, March 2 against UNC Pembroke. Tip-off in the Pacer regular season finale is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
USC Aiken concluded the 2011-12 season with a 21-8 overall record. The Pacers have now claimed a 20-win season in four of the last five years.
The USC Aiken men's basketball program has won 110 games over the course of the last five years. The 110 wins ties them with College of Charleston and Benedict for the most wins in the Palmetto State over the course of the last five years.
The Pacers had one of the best seasons in school history in their 2011-12 campaign.
The Peach Belt Conference regular-season champions with a league mark of 14-4, USC Aiken made its fourth trip to the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament in the last five years in the 2011-12 season.
USC Aiken was ranked nationally for much of the 2011-12 season. The Pacers were never ranked lower than third in the Southeast Region rankings. In fact, USC Aiken closed the regular season as No. 1 in the region rankings. USC Aiken would eventually earn the No. 2 seed in the Southeast Regional contested at Montevallo.
Pacer guards Sterling Council and Re'mon Nelson were both named to the Peach Belt Conference All-Conference Team. Council was a First-Team choice, while Nelson was selected to the Third-Team. Nelson, a junior, was also named to the Peach Belt Conference All-Tournament Team. Alexander was chosen as the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year.
Council, a senior, was chosen to the NABC Division II Southeast Region All-District First-Team. He was also named to the 2012 Daktronics Division II Men's Basketball All-Southeast Region Second-Team.
USC Aiken sophomore guard Jesse Seilern was selected to the Capital One Academic NCAA Division II Men's Basketball District Three First-Team. He was also named to the 2011-12 Peach Belt Conference Men's Basketball All-Academic Team.
