INDIANAPOLIS – The University of South Carolina Aiken
baseball team is ranked sixth in the inaugural NCAA Division II
Southeast Region rankings.
The region rankings were released on Wednesday by the Southeast
Region selection committee. The rankings are used to determine the
region participants from the Southeast Region for the 2012 NCAA
Division II Baseball Championship.
Six teams from the Southeast Region will receive an invitation
to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship. An automatic bid is
given to the winner of the Peach Belt Conference, the South
Atlantic Conference and Conference Carolinas. The next three
highest ranked teams will earn an at-large berth into the national
tournament.
Five Peach Belt Conference teams are ranked in the current
region top-10. Armstrong is No. 1 in the region rankings, while
Francis Marion is fourth, Lander is seventh and Georgia College is
eighth.
Current national No. 1 Mount Olive is ranked third in the region
tally, while nationally fourth-ranked Tusculum is second in the
Southeast Region rankings.
Nationally 17th-ranked USC Aiken (31-16, 18-12 PBC) will next
welcome nationally 14th-ranked and regionally
fifth-ranked Catawba to Roberto Hernandez Stadium for a two-game
non-conference series.
The two-game series will begin with a 7 p.m. game on Friday,
April 27.
The two nationally-ranked foes will then close the two-game set
with a 2 p.m. game on Saturday, April 28.
