USC Aiken Tabbed Sixth in Inaugural Baseball Southeast Region Rankings

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team is ranked sixth in the inaugural NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings.

The region rankings were released on Wednesday by the Southeast Region selection committee. The rankings are used to determine the region participants from the Southeast Region for the 2012 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship.

Six teams from the Southeast Region will receive an invitation to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship. An automatic bid is given to the winner of the Peach Belt Conference, the South Atlantic Conference and Conference Carolinas. The next three highest ranked teams will earn an at-large berth into the national tournament.

Five Peach Belt Conference teams are ranked in the current region top-10. Armstrong is No. 1 in the region rankings, while Francis Marion is fourth, Lander is seventh and Georgia College is eighth.

Current national No. 1 Mount Olive is ranked third in the region tally, while nationally fourth-ranked Tusculum is second in the Southeast Region rankings.

Nationally 17th-ranked USC Aiken (31-16, 18-12 PBC) will next welcome nationally 14th-ranked and regionally fifth-ranked Catawba to Roberto Hernandez Stadium for a two-game non-conference series.

The two-game series will begin with a 7 p.m. game on Friday, April 27.

The two nationally-ranked foes will then close the two-game set with a 2 p.m. game on Saturday, April 28.
