Box Score AIKEN, S.C. – Five University of South Carolina Aiken
pitchers combined to allow Augusta State only three hits in a 7-1
win over the Jaguars on Wednesday evening at Roberto Hernandez
Stadium.
The contest was the second game of the Fourth Annual Outback
Cup. Nationally 14th-ranked USC Aiken (30-14) is now 7-1 all-time
in the annual two-game non-conference series between the two
rivals.
The Pacers conclude the 2012 season with a 4-1 record over the
Jaguars. The Pacers are now 64-20 all-time against Augusta State
(13-33).
The win over Augusta State on Monday garnered the Pacers their
30th win of the year. The Pacers have now claimed 30 or
more wins in 11 of Kenny Thomas' 13 seasons in charge of the USC
Aiken baseball program.
The five Pacer pitchers fanned 12 Jaguars in addition to
allowing the Jaguars just the three hits.
Pacer starting pitcher Tyler Stephan
(Louisville, Ky./Trinity) dealt the first five innings to claim his
first win of the year. Stephan struck out five Jaguars.
Wilson Taylor (3-3) took the loss for Augusta State in the game.
Taylor pitched the first 3.1 innings, allowing six earned runs.
USC Aiken out-hit Augusta State, 12-3, in the contest. Four
Pacers concluded their efforts with multiple hits.
Stephen
Carmon (Camden, S.C./Camden) led the Pacers at the dish. The
senior shortstop was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Three Pacers finished with two hits with Nick Aranas
(Lexington, S.C./Lexington), Bill
Gerstenslager (Solon, Ohio/Mercyhurst) and JJ Loker (Elkton,
Va./Spotswood) each notching two in the Pacer win.
Aranas was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Aranas
belted a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth. The home run
was Aranas' team-high seventh of the season.
USC Aiken got things rolling in the game by plating three runs
in the bottom of the second stanza. The Pacers would add three more
in the bottom of the fourth to own a commanding 6-0 lead.
Aranas' tater in the home half of the eighth countered Augusta
State's lone run of the game scored in the top of the eighth.
Due to the threat of inclement weather on Sunday, the USC
Aiken-Francis Marion Peach Belt Conference baseball series at
Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium has been moved to a
Friday-Saturday three-game series.
The three-game national top-15 showdown between No. 14 USC Aiken
(30-14, 17-10 PBC) and No. 8 Francis Marion (31-13, 17-9 PBC) is
now set to begin with a single 7 p.m. contest on Friday, April
20.
The three-game series between the Peach Belt Conference East
Division rivals will then close with a doubleheader on Saturday,
April 21. The first game of the doubleheader on Saturday is slated
for 2 p.m.
The three-game series is the final Peach Belt Conference series
of the 2012 season for the Pacers.
