Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C. – USC Aiken softball pitcher India Kornegay
set the all-time school strikeout record on Friday in the
doubleheader with nationally sixth-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State
at JH Satcher Field.
The Pacers (24-13, 9-7 PBC) dropped game one, 7-2. They fell 6-1
in the second game of the twinbill.
The doubleheader was part of Senior Day at JH Satcher Field.
Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula HS), who now has 444 strikeouts in
her career, entered the first game with 437 career strikeouts,
which was tied for the all-time record. She struck out the second
batter of the game to officially become the all-time leader in
strikeouts in USC Aiken softball history. She passed Samantha Blair
who held the record with 437 in her career from 2004-07.
Kornegay finished the game fanning seven batters. She currently
has 225 strikeouts on the 2012 season, tying her with Stacie Oakley
(2005) for most strikeouts in a single season at USC
Aiken.
Led by senior Whitney Clary
(Newberry, S.C./Newberry HS) and junior Lindsey Jones
(North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta HS), the Pacers garnered seven
hits in the first game. Clary and Jones both had two hits apiece in
the contest.
Cortney
Sadler (Bradenton, Fla./State College of Fla.,
Manatee-Sarasota) hit her third home run of the season in game
one.
Kornegay (19-9) suffered the loss in the circle for the
Pacers.
The Pirates (39-8, 15-1 PBC) out-hit the Pacers, 10-7, in game
one. Armstrong had four players with multiple hits in the
game.
Megan Barnwell (17-3) earned the win for Armstrong in the
circle.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first four innings of
game two before Armstrong was able to plate three runs in the top
of the fifth inning. The Pacers would have one runner score in the
bottom of the inning, but it would not be enough to overcome the
deficit.
The Pirates scored three more insurance runs in the top of the
seventh to secure the victory.
The Pirates out-hit the Pacers in game two, 11-5.
No Pacer had multiple hits in the second game loss.
Shelby Duff and April Jowers, who both had three hits in the
second game, led the Pirates at the plate.
Samantha
Lemm (Berlin, N.J./Eastern HS) was the losing pitcher in game
two. Lemm is now 5-4 on the season.
Caitlin Campbell (18-3) earned the win for the Pirates in the
second game.
USC Aiken will hit the road tomorrow (Saturday, April 14) to
square off against nationally 13th-ranked conference foe North
Georgia in Dahlonega, Ga. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1
p.m.
