Box Score 2 BREVARD, N.C. – Kaitlyn White
finished with seven hits to help lead the University of South
Carolina Aiken softball team to a doubleheader split with Brevard
in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at BC Softball
Field.
USC Aiken picked up a 6-0 win in game one before falling 5-2 in
game two.
The first game was knotted at 0-0 until the top of the fourth
inning when USC Aiken's Lindsey Jones
(North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta HS) scored on a single through
the left side by Victoria
Burkett (Gilbert, S.C./Gilbert HS). Jones had arrived on base
via a single of her own.
The Pacers would then add two more runs in the top of the
fifth.
USC Aiken would score its fourth run of the first game in the top
of the sixth when White (Columbia, S.C./College of Charleston)
doubled in Brandy Bossle
(North East, Md./Rising Sun HS), who had singled earlier in the
inning.
The Pacers would add their final two runs in the top of the seventh
to secure the six-run shutout victory.
India
Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula HS) tied the school record for
wins with her 19th victory of the year in game one. Kornegay (19-8)
struck out eight in her complete game performance. The reigning
Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week allowed only five
hits.
Kayla Clemens suffered the loss in the circle in game one to fall
to 12-13 on the year.
USC Aiken in total out-hit Brevard, 10-5, in game one.
White claimed almost half of the Pacer hits in the game with four.
She was 4-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
Burkett was the only other Pacer with multiple hits. She was
2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Already the all-time leader in the category in school history,
Whitney Clary (Newberry, S.C./Newberry HS) broke
her own single-season record in sacrifice hits with her
19th sacrifice of the year in the fifth inning of game
one
No Brevard player was able to secure multiple hits.
Brevard scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and
never looked back in game two.
White would triple in two runs for the Pacers in the top of the
fourth, but that would prove to be the only runs the Pacers would
be able to manage in the game.
Despite the loss, USC Aiken out-hit Brevard, 12-5, in game
two.
White and Cortney Sadler
(Bradenton, Fla./State College of Fla., Manatee-Sarasota) led USC
Aiken in game two with each procuring three hits. White also had
two RBIs.
Samantha
Lemm (Berlin, N.J./Eastern HS), who pitched just one-third of
an inning, suffered the loss on the hill for USC Aiken in game
two. She is now 5-3 on the year.
Kornegay pitched the final 5.2 innings of the game, fanning
four.
Kornegay's 12 strikeouts over the course of the day
allowed her to tie Samantha Blair (2004-07) for the most strikeouts
in school history with 437.
Alyssa Miller pitched the first four innings to claim the win
for Brevard in game two. She is now 8-8 on the year. She also led
Brevard at the dish in the game, obtaining three of Brevard's five
hits in game two.
Clemens pitched the final three innings to acquire her first
save of the year.
The Pacers will next welcome nationally sixth-ranked league foe
Armstrong Atlantic State to the friendly confines of JH Satcher
Field on Friday, April 13. The doubleheader between the Pacers and
Pirates is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. The doubleheader will
serve as Senior Day for USC Aiken.
One day later, USC Aiken will hit the road to square off against
nationally 13th-ranked conference foe North Georgia in
Dahlonega, Ga. on Saturday, April 14. The doubleheader is set to
begin at 1 p.m.
