Pacers Fall Just Short in Bid for Ninth PBC Men's Golf Championship

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – UNC Pembroke defeated USC Aiken on the first playoff hole to claim the team championship at the 2012 Peach Belt Conference Men's Golf Championship at the 7,057-yard, par-72 Mountain View Golf Course at Callaway Gardens. 

Both USC Aiken (295-287-290) and UNC Pembroke (288-291-293) concluded the three rounds of the PBC Championship with identical team scores of 872.

The playoff consisted of all five players on each team playing the playoff hole. The top four scores were then counted.

USC Aiken finished the playoff hole with three pars and a bogey, while UNC Pembroke had one birdie and three pars.

Three Pacer golfers finished in the top-10 with First-Team All-Peach Belt Conference performer Matt Atkins (Owensboro, Ky./Henderson State) leading the way with a second-place finish. Atkins produced a three-round tally of 2-under 214 (70-75-69) to claim second.

Flagler's Joel Dahlenburg claimed the individual medalist honors with a 3-under 213 (73-67-73).

Both Gaines Milliner (Aiken, S.C./Aiken) and Taylor Welborn (LaGrange, Ga./Darton) concluded the PBC Championship in a tie for sixth place at 218. Milliner (73-72-73) and Welborn (76-69-73) both posted 73s in the final round. 

JP Solis (Morelia, Mexico/Lico Morelia) obtained 13th place with a three-round score of 222 (76-71-75). Hayden Letien (Sumter, S.C./Sumter) ended things in 39th with a three-round tally of 231 (77-77-77).

Nationally 18th-ranked USC Aiken will next wait to see if it gets an invitation to the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regionals, which will be contested May 7-9 at Rock Barn in Conover, N.C. USC Aiken has advanced to regional play in 19 of the last 20 seasons.

USC Aiken under Hall of Fame head coach Michael Carlisle in the NCAA Division II Tournament has three NCAA Division II National Championships (2004, 2005, 2006) and three NCAA Division II runner-up finishes (1995, 1996 and 1999).

In the past eight years, USC Aiken has five NCAA National Championships, which includes three team titles and two individual crowns (Jeff Goff, 2008; Dane Burkhart, 2005).
